I used a 30-06 with 165 Accubonds last year and took a nice buck.

I don't think that you could wrong with Ballistic Tips or Accubonds in any weight. What gun are you shooting?

I shoot 140gr Berger VLD hunting out of my 7-08 with great results on the local whitetails which run 160ish pounds on average. Does run 115 pounds. Most all are DRT and the rest less than 20 yards.

I am about to start working up a load for my 280 for antelope. I am going to see what I can do with some 140gr Sierra Gamekings and 4831 powder. If they shoot any better than the Winchester Ballistic Silvertips I will be greatly impressed. My gun loves the Winchester BSTs and it will be hard to top that.

140 gr Accubond's

Pushes it out at about 2850 fps. Been a great load in terms of accuracy and knock down on antelope.

Lots of 4831 being used. That's a good thing. I have 4 pounds of it. I was thinking 140gr in something like an A-Bond. Although I have 300 Sierra 140s on the shelf at the moment.

Accubonds are my go-to in any caliber.

What rifle are you using?

280 Ackley improved w/ 25 inch barrel but a quicker 1 in 9 twist.
55.5 grains IMR 4831 with 160 accubonds @ 2840. In this rifle IMR is much faster than H4831 and more accurate and the greater temp sensitivity is manageable. They are not the same powder or load densities!!!!
Run H4831 with 140 Accubonds @ 2950 but like the heavier bullet. Your rifle may not.

Some 280s and 280 AIs like IMR 7828 very much with the heavier bullets.

I have a Ruger Hawkeye due in here Fri. I haven't had a 280 since the early 80s. It was a 77V Ruger. We didn't have the propellants then that we do now. Funny that all the old stand-by powders of the 80s are still pulling their share of the load. I'll be trying some 7828 for sure. I've had fantastic success with it in the 7 Rem mag and 160gr pills. Rl22 is another powder I've come to love the last few years. I don't have any A-Bonds in 140gr right now. My 160gr A-Bonds are ear marked for the 7 Mag.

In the .280 ...4831 is where I'd start, same with the .270 for that matter.

I'd also start with the 140gr Ballistic Tip or Accubond. Load data and POA/POI will be the same between the two. If there's a better hunting bullet than the Accubond in almost any cartridge, I just don't know what it is.

Makes sense to me. Now I need to score some 140 A-Bonds.

Just a side note, I'm sure you've hunted them before, but they're a small animal and one of my favorite to eat. It's real easy to mess up the front shoulders completely on them. I only bow hunt them, but my daughter has taken them with a 243, and 270. The 270 with Hornady can be a bit destructive.

Have fun.
