Is a 30-06 okay for an Arizona late season elk hunt?

I’m in no mans land with 14 elk points in Az. I’m probably close to drawing a late season rifle hunt. I have a 30-06 that I shoot pretty well with but I’m from Michigan and don’t have a lot of experience past 200 yards.
Any thoughts would be helpful…

30-06 is plenty for elk in AZ. Just keep the ft lbs of energy in the back of your mind if you start to stretch your shots out.

If its too far, get closer. If you can't get any closer know when to say that's too far.

My first rifle was a 30-06 and it did fine. If you shoot it well, use it. It will kill an elk past 200 yards.

Excellent choice, its not about Bow And Arrow it's the Indian using it, Bullet Placement is always paramount. Good Luck

If you are on an AZ late rifle elk hunt I would be much more worried about having excellent quality big optics (15x’s, BTX, Rigid Tripods) and knowing how to use them than the caliber of my rifle.

Anything in the 270-30.06 class is fine for elk at any reasonable range. We've killed better than 70 as a group with such rifles. Use something like the Federal premium with the 180 partition and you'll be eating tenderloin soon.

Like others have said, your 30-06 is more than capable.

I would recommend finding a range to work on shooting at extended ranges. Also confirm your ballistics. You can mimic shooting at extended distances with a rim fire.

My elk last year didn't complain. 358 yard shot with a 165 grain accubond hand load. I wouldn't think twice about using it again!

I have killed three bulls with a 30-06. My teenage son will be elk hunting for the first time, and that is what I am going to have him shoot. He’s pretty comfortable with a 270, but we are going to practice with the 30-06 up to 300 yards.
