well guys, my hunting partner drew a Oregon sheep hunt this year! it will be our first sheep trip. For those that have had experience in this situation what are some of the big things to prepare for? we are both getting in shape for the canyons. but what are some things that get overlooked?
thanks

Learning what the unit can produce, figuring out what you want out of it and knowing what that looks like when you’re looking at it through a spotting scope.

A lot of guys end a once in a lifetime opportunity on the first morning on a small sheep.

Enjoy the whole experience and take your time.

I've hunted it. I had the West side tag in 2015. Which side dies he have? Planning to float the river? Scouting trips planned? Going to the sheep orientation?

There are lots of skulls in the canyon. That one is still there. We saw 3 more if I remember right. They are illegal to pick up on public. There are places you can scout without floating or paying a trespass. I walked in to mine on a day trip.

I would explore the trespass fee options. once in a lifetime tag and with the wrong year for water levels in the John day, it could ruin your hunt. Or you may float past one that you decide is worth going back for

PM me if you need any more info, I'm happy to share it. I took my dad on that hunt last year, it's outstanding. Congrats on the draw.

First hiking trip this weekend. Going to see how the water flows look and check a couple canyons that can be hiked to. Hoping to get a few pics of some rams just to get familiar with what's around. Planning on floating the following weekend. It's coming up quickly!

Good luck, a buddy of mine will be floating it this year with the east side tag (water levels permitting)

What a trip! Lots of sheep seen. Now just need to draw or have another friend draw to be able to return.
