Looking for a quad for the kids. Oldest is 13 and sub 100 pounds, youngest is 2. Also have a side by side. Thinking something in the 50-90cc range.

I want something slow and “safe” but I don’t need them outgrowing it before they get to use it.

I assume Yamaha and Honda are the go to?

I bought my son a couple Polaris 4 wheelers when he was young, a 50cc and later a 90cc. They wore good for him as you can govern the throttle on them.
I’d say for the older child, just get a full size machine, they outgrow them fast. But, if you just are buying one, get a 90cc.

At what age did your son outgrow the 90?

IMHO just buy used until they can handle a full sized machine. There is a reason they make kids quads. Having flipped a quad and ending up with it on top of me being able to get away from and push away the machine if necessary is pretty important when learning.

Used kids quads and dirt bikes are insanely easy to sell with virtually zero money lost if they are kept in good condition.

Is this for your property/farm use or recreational use?

I think the 50cc/90cc "race" quad style ones are fine for young kids learning the ropes. I opt for a small 200cc utility quad. He's able to haul things, do chores. Even pull a mower behind it, and still go hot rod around once works done.

Kawasaki bayou 220 was what I grew up on and what I'm looking for now for my 10 yr old.

Edit. Random bayou 220 pic added for nostalgia

My 13 year old boy drives my 550 Polaris just fine. He is skinny as a rail but almost my height. I make him drive slower and he doesn’t do any trail riding unless I’m right there with him. A 220 would be good for your older son and graduate to a bigger one later on. Keep the small one for when the younger one gets a bigger.

I know first hand how quick accidents can happen. I rolled a 500 over on top of me half on a trail and half hanging off on a steep incline. I couldn’t hold it off of me and had to get out of the way. I then watched it as it rolled, bounced, and exploded 800 feet down the mountain. 😬😳

Our kids are 5 and 7 and jam around our ranch and canal roads on these.

Wanted older Honda Four Tracks but settled on these. Replaced the carbs and tuned them up and they run like champs.

i started my daughters at 4 on polaris outlaw 50 then at 7 ish maybe younger they went to a polaris outlaw 110. At 10 they are riding polaris hawkeye 300 4x4 and love it

A manual shift Honda Recon is pretty bulletproof. They will do 44mph wide open in 5th which is too fast for a kid. But it’s a useful machine that they aren’t going to outgrow, I’m 6’4/205 and I hauled an elk out on one last fall.
Supervision is going to be the main thing until they’re skilled enough that you can trust them. Nothing is safe unless it’s operated in a safe manner.

I had it good growing up, dad had a 250SX Honda that I learned to ride, way better than the “suspension” on a BigRed. Dad would tell me I could ride but not to get out of 2nd gear, he could here me shift from inside the house and there’d be trouble if I hit 3rd. 😁

I grew up flipping the big reds on top of myself and down any grade more than 2 degrees. Kids are built different these days. I’d like them to survive.

Geeze you and your kids.
You're so needy. Survive. Psh.

we have the little polaris ones. They work fine. they squat pretty good when you get on them with the kids.

Feel like there’s a meme in there somewhere. Lol

Got a Honda 90 when my daughter was 5. She’s now 10 and on a Honda 250. My boy, 7, now drives the 90. It’s 5 years old and it’s been great. A little cold blooded but got that cleaned up and fixed. Can’t beat a Honda. If worried about speed/size, run it with a restricter or tell them they can’t go above 1st or 2nd gear. The 90s have 3 gears.

I am not sure if you are familiar, but the governor on a lot of them is a nut/bolt that limits thumb throttle travel.

If you find one too fast for them and it does not have that you could probably diy a solution.

Damn, what the hell is wrong with bikes?

That's what I got before I could buy my own foe whealer.

Rode it between farms too, like 4 miles apart.
