Depends on how the animal is presenting and power of the bullet/arrow hitting the animal. All of these things are going to be affecred by caliber/draw# of the weapon platform and distance to animal.
the less energy you have means a smaller window of opportunity, whereas a larger energy amount affords a slightly larger window.
agree woth the above that a perfectly broadside elk with a reasonably powerful gun at moderare distance offers a window about the size of a 12 inch dinner plate.

I hang 8” plates for elk and 6” plates for deer out to 1,200 yards on my home range. Some 4” plates for fun as well. Hasn’t failed me in the field hunting yet.8EF4B167-B26B-446C-B9EA-1639196C8D9E.jpeg
