Kimber Montana 308 for elk.

New western hunter from Ohio looking for a western hunting rifle. Currently have a 25-06 savage that use for WV deer but wanting something with a bit more knockdown power. The rifles first hunt will be Montana Elk in 2021 or 2022. My buddy is selling a Kimber Montana 308 with a Leopold VX3 for a good price (700$). Should I swoop it up and start the familiarization with this rifle or look into something else? Shots will be 300 yards max.

At 300 yards or less, I can't imagine a .308 has more "knockdown power" than a still-smokin' .25-06.

That is a good deal for that rifle if you like it, though.

300 yards for either a 25-06 or a 308 will poke an elk just fine.

I have a .308 kimber montana with a VX-3. It has been my primary hunting rifle for the last 4 years. I shoot 165gr trophy coppers. I can confirm it is a suitable elk caliber at 300yds. Seems like a great buy to me.

For what its worth, I just bought a kimber muzzle break for mine. At 6 pounds with scope, it had a bit of recoil, making longer sessions at the range less fun....but maybe I'm just soft.

Its a perfect set up for sure. .308 is a good elk cartridge. Your 25-06 will smoke em just fine. One of my favorite 400 and under calibers in the right setting for elk

Mine kills elk every year and is my go to. A 150-180 of your choice. My go to is a 168 NAB and Varget. I ask everyone who says 300 yards, whatever how many have you killed with a 308? Just curious
