I am stationed in Texas and there are no mountains to climb, so I hit the stairmaster pretty hard most mornings. Is anyone interested in a friendly competition? Categories would be Body Weight / 25# / 40# pack weights. Might be fun to see who can be “king of the mountain” during training. Nothing pushes me like a little competition...

ROE: must be a stairmaster, not an elliptical - you know a stairmaster when you see one. No using the bars for support or to take weight off your legs. It’s a running 30:00 clock, so if you pause for a rest, the timer is still running. If it makes it easier, it probably isn’t allowed; it’s supposed to hurt. Post your body weight, pack weight (25/40#) if used, your total floors climbed, and step per minute average, if available. For purposes of standardization, 30:00 will be the time for all the categories.

Sounds like a plan. I’ll try to keep the original post with weekly “King of the Mountain”.

If you want a SERIOUS kick between the legs, try a 20 minute HIIT training on the stairclimber. Essentially, you 2 minutes low, then 1 minute high, cycled 6 times with a 2 minute cool down. The idea is that you are literally running up the stairclimber during the 1 minute high. I personally do it as follows

0-2 minutes - Level 5 - Warm Up
2-3 minutes - Level 18 - High
3-5 minutes - Level 5 - Low
5-6 minutes - Level 18 - High
6-8 minutes - Level 5 - Low
8-9 minutes - Level 18 - High
9-11 minutes - Level 5 - Low
11-12 minutes - Level 18 - High
12-14 minutes - Level 5 - Low
14-15 minutes - Level 18 - High
15-17 minutes - Level 5 - Low
17-18 minutes - Level 18 - High
18-20 minutes - Level 5 - Cool Down

You can easily adjust as needed. If you can pull off the 18 no problem, but need to slow down the low to properly lower your heart rate, you can drop it to a 3 or 4. On the other hand, if you are feeling really intense you can crank the high up beyond 18. The key element is letting you HR spike during the high then go back down during the low. Really awesome workout.

189 +/- 2 lbs, 40 years old.

My times, as of this morning, current within the last week:

Body weight: 216 floors / 115 steps per minute
25# pack: 172 floors / 91 spm
40# pack: 155 floors / 82 spm

I just started pack workouts. My goal is to get to 190 floors at 25# and 175 floors with 40#. Basically, my “Bodyweight floors” minus one floor for every pound of pack weight.

You are the man!!! I hope I can knock out that many stairs when I am 55! I understand the sweat... it’s like I jumped in a pool by the time I finish. Awesome pictures by the way.

Do you think we ought to do a “masters division” for 50+?

200+ steps in 30 minutes is elite level.

Am I that out of shape? I think I had between 115-120 with my boots.

I don’t know about elite! I am in good shape , and I hit the stairmaster 4-5 days per week. I know there are dudes on Rokslide who can crush me. I’m hoping they come out of the woodwork. I’m also not wearing boots on the stairmaster, just a pack and tennis shoes.

I do 180 floors, no hands, in an hour (four 1 minute breaks) with 72#, verified, three times per week. I’m 25 and weigh in at 180 with my boots on.
