We went to the west side of Kodiak last year, despite the hard winter kill we decided to go for it regardless. It was a huge learning curve and first time to Kodiak, 2 of us had been to Alaska previously in 2018 on the North Slope chasing caribou. West side, specifically Zachar Bay is particularly steep and brushy, we were in for a bit of unexpected work. We toughed it out and had a great time despite the tough conditions and the big die off. The south end was on our radar, but being unfamiliar and going unguided we elected to stay in cabins as opposed to pitching tents. I'd be lying if I said bear concerns didn't drive that line of thinking. We ended up not having any issues with bears, and the die off over on that side of the island was pretty stout. We found skeletons everywhere, and mostly were shed bucks, never seen anything like it. Thanks for all the advice leading up to this adventure.

Ton of fun, and Kodiak is an amazing place, one we will return to again probably in 2023. We are booked for North Slope caribou again in August of 2022. Alaska is addictive!
