For close to 20 years now I have been going to Kodiak Island on and off to deer hunt. I have an incredible respect for the big bears that call it home so I have always been satisfied rifle hunting there.

Lately I have been thinking about taking my flintlock or bow to the island next time and have come up with this unit to give me some reassurance than my rifle always provides.

This Ruger 1911 had all I wanted to start with; steel frame, rail for a light, and night sights.

I always have my binoculars with me and the Sitka Bivy has really good support and is not cumbersome so I contacted Razco and let him know what I was looking for. I’m very happy how all this carries in the field and it will all lay right next to my pillow at night. That light on the rail is very handy in the dark. I don’t want to be fumbling around for the pistol AND a light if there is a problem after dark

The 46 Rowland is a very impressive round and a very simple switch with their kit of a new barrel and springs.

I’ve got over 200 rounds of various weights and velocities thru it now and it digests everything but the lowest velocity 195g .45 ACP loads. I could probably dink around with the springs to eliminate that issue but I probably won’t. Any 230g load works great and is a pleasure to shoot. The 255g full power Rowland loads are a handful and I’m sure the 100 that I have will be a lifetime supply. I’ll spend 99.9% of my range time with .45 ACP loads.

Underwood has the best ammo that I've found for the Rowland. Their 255gr hardcast is polymer coated and runs cleaner than the bare lead.

My heavy handload is a 265gr wide flat nose at 1200fps. In my Glock 21 it isn't bad to shoot and thumps a whitetail. I took it up to 1250 fps, but decided the recoil wasn't worth the velocity. That load will go length wise through a 250lb whitetail. It will do the similarly in a bear.

Nice setup. How doe it feel with a pack belt on under it?

There is at least 4” clearance from the bottom of the grip to the waist belt. No issues.

Nice pistol.

I tried a setup like that one year on Kodiak.....and I didn't like how the draw wasn't clean. The holster tended to want to come with my pistol.

It might need a dropper attachment to your belt....just like the old cowboy rigs had a string wrapped around their leg to hold their holster in place.

Another factor with that setup thats maybe a factor to consider? That safety is on the inside against your body where contact can disengage.

The Rowland has become very popular in these parts. Most seem to be on the FN frame.
I think the guys are shooting Lehigh Penetrators.......I'll check and report back.

Yeah, there is plenty of support from the Sitka harness up down and sideways plus the extra strap from the holster. And there are plenty of safeties on the 1911. Those have been non issues.
