Well, I just got the new superdown hooded jacket in the mail. First impressions of the jacket are so-so....

The jacket sizing is very small compared to the "made in Canada" sizing. I'm 5'11" 170lbs and the size large just fits. I would even say a bit tight in the arms and wrist. And I have fairly slim arms. The old Kuiu I am a med top.

The stretch fabric does not seem to have much stretch at all, so getting the right size is very important.

For a down jacket, I was expecting a bit of a puffy jacket. This jacket is far from a traditional down jacket. The baffles lay flat and really don't seem to puff up. Also the distribution of down is not even. When I hold the jacket up to a light, some baffles are dark and full and others seem thin and have minimal down in them.

The Kuiu web site states the jacket will be 850+ fill power, the tag on the jacket states 700FP? I'll have to call Kuiu to find out why.

I'm headed to Northern Alberta over x-mas so I'll be able to see how warm this jacket will be. I'll add to this post with the results.

Cheers,

Todd

Hmmm, I should have the pullover today. I hope it fits just like the rest! If it only has 700 fill that's BS!

I've had no luck getting a hold of anyone from Kuiu, must be lunch time? I may be reading the tag wrong? It reads "700FP over premium down" I am assuming "FP" stands for fill power, am I reading this wrong?

That is WAY lame. No way Kuiu should be charging $250 for a 700 down fill jacket...especially when its advertised at 850. I'd call them pronto....hope this isn't a sign of things to come from the move across the pond.

I certainly hope this is not the future of KUIU.

Ryan let us know about your pullover. Thats the item I have been looking at. If this is a 700 fill gonna be a big dissapointment.

But the move was about better service right ? It wasn't about selling out our canadian brothers in a cash grab....right? Well , with production just down the road...in china , they will have it straightened out in a jiffy ! No way Jason would move production to china to make cheap junk to sell at top dollar and make a quick dollar!? If they got 700 fd down instead of 850fp coats and the quality was way off there is no way he would ship it to his customers....right? Buyer beware !

Hey it's Kuiu, we have to give them the benefit of the doubt and chalk this up to a simple mistake that passed their more stringent quality control that was put into place with the move :). I'm sure the 700 is a typo and should read 850, also the large on the tag probably was supposed to be a medium. Simple tag error.

Yes , a typographical error... and the lighter and darker areas are not uneven distribution of down , just different colored down...you know...some from chinese gray geese and some from chinese snow geese;)

It is pretty easy, in this day and age, for a company like KUIU to market and sell on the Internet. It is also pretty easy for them to shoot themselves in the foot.

Hopefully it's all just an easily explained misunderstanding...

Exactly and if it is 700fp, well it's probably cause the 850 is on backorder :)

Well , after sneaking production out of free and democratic Canada to the asian version of national socialism I hope it is more like a shot to the heart. Every day I am finding more american clothing companies. Hopefully an american company will fill this market nich and kuiu will go bust for all the bad karma they have earned.

I wished someone who knows how to grade down would break a jacket down and weigh and grade the down. I don't have the knowledge or the money to burn to do it.

This the info I got from Kuiu

Hi All,

Our Superdown garments contain only 850+ Fill Power down sourced from Poland, we were able to specify this with Toray prior to application of the waterproofing agent. The hang tag was provided by Toray and is generic to all Quixdown. We believe it is specifying that they will only make Quixdown with a minimum FP of 700. Sorry for the confusion but please be assured that our down is 850+FP.
