My first and only bull elk I had a Idaho sportsman license and was hunting for a doe.
Only had a leatherman (on elk's back), 3 miles from truck.

Montana 1991. Shot him with my grandfather's 30-06 rifle that he gave my mom. Stupid heavy rifle. Photo is in the front yard after I got home that afternoon. My father and I went up and camped the night before the opener. I had archery hunted the area and knew right where they would be. I had the first load back to the truck by 9am, and we were out by 2pm. Also the first year my dad couldn't hunt. He was a few weeks out from a back surgery. Killed him not to be able to help pack it out. Easy 2 mile packout up an old logging road from the clearcut the elk were feeding in.
