I am interested in replacing my current scope with a vx3i. My son is going to have his first big game season this year, and I love the idea of dialing with the CDS so he can hold dead on at any yardage. In anyone’s opinion, is the 4.5x14 worth $100 more than the 3.5x10?

Between the 3.5-10x40 and the 4.5-14x40 (both with 1" tubes), I don't see a reason to go up to 14x since there is no parallax adjustment.

However, I think the 4.5-14x40 with the 30mm tube, side focus, and CDS-ZL is a great scope for the money. I would put that scope on any of my hunting rifles where I wanted to shoot beyond 300 yards.

My Browning 300WSM has the VX-3I 4.5-14x40 30mm SF CDS-ZL. I got a custom turret made by Leupold for Federal Premium 165gr TSX. I had to make some minor adjustments but I am validated to 400 yards now.

I have the vx3i 4.5-14x40, 30mm tube, side focus, cds-zl. Nice little scope decent eyebox, not a bad rifle, decent glass. CDS is a good option for some, within reason, it will work within a given distance.

My buddy has the cds on a 300 win mag and he had a custom dial made for his handload and was able to walk it out to 800 yards hitting every gong on first round

I have a new one for sale in the classifieds with scope covers. I'm open to offers.

How old is your son?
How much shooting experience does he have?
Out to what distance can he make consistent first round hits on an eight or 10 inch target?

You might be getting a little ahead of yourself wanting to dial if he’s not an experienced shooter at those distances.

I’d recommend a 3.5–10 and not worry about the CDS dial for now. I have a 30+ year old 3.5-10 that currently sits on a 6.5 CM that we regularly practice out to 600 with.

I actually changed my mind and bought a swfa 3-9 scope. I am planning to carry the rifle and dial for him if needed. We will practice and will keep shots to under 300 if he proves to be proficient at that range. He has shot my 22 quite a bit and seems to be as good as me. That is probably not saying much.

I have an older VX2 4-12 that I had converted to CDS when they first came out, best decision I’ve made for myself. It’s a blast to put all your shots on a 9” paper plate at 650 yds. I put 3-9s w/CDS on the grandkids 7mm-08s but they won’t get the dials until I get a load dialed in. I’d opt for the 4.5-14 but ultimately you have to decide that, but you will enjoy being able to dial up the yardage and put the crosshairs on your target.
