Hey guys I'm trying to put together a low recoil rifle mainly for Whitetail and mule deer some varmints in between.
Shots under 600.
I am open the factory as well what would you guys recommend. Something preferably can find components for.
I finally got tired of shooting 30-06. Shoulda done this long time ago. So I get a 243 and my old man grabs it. So I got a 350 legend too. Not a 600 yard gun but light shooting and tight shooting, about a 300 yard gun.
for 600 yds:
6 CM
6.5 CM is a tad more than 243 recoil
I wouldn't go long action, not with the two stubby options above.
I picked up a 6.5CM Bergera B14 HMR Wilderness. Braked and a bit heavy, but my 60lb sopping wet recoil shy boys actually started fighting over whose turn it was! They hated the youth savage axis in the same caliber - kicked like a mule.
I’m a huge 7mm-08 fan however I haven’t seen a box of ammo around here in a year so I would go with 6.5 creedmoor. Ammo is everywhere for that. Also if you search gunbroker it looks like that’s the main caliber that rifle companies are making right now
You didn't say weight or unless I missed it. I had a custom Rem 700 .308 with a 20" #4 shilen select match barrel threaded that you could shoot all day with no issues due to I had a little weight. Sold it and picked up a Tikka in .308 and it kicks much more. Not a lot of recoil for a rifle, but more than the 700 I had. So with not knowing what rifle your looking at, weight will make a difference in your felt recoil.
308 / 7mm-08. You want to shoot game at 600 with low recoil. If you don't punch enough energy out there you're gonna lose animals. That means heavy for caliber bullets and recoil. I want a really great 4x4 truck that gets 30 MPG too. 308 w/ 150s or better 165s old technology is the Goldilocks cartridge. Not too big and not too small. Get an epic recoil pad end use enough gun.
