Use them in camp when campfires are restricted during fire season. They work well enough that no one needs a headlamp to cook or eat and it provides a nice glow to gather around in absence of a fire. Have to be suspended overhead to work well.

I've been using one for about 3 season now and like it. Solid little piece, it certainly burns the fuel up, be sure to carry extra mantles.

I just bought the outdoor version after seeing it mentioned in SO forums. Just got it today and will test it this weekend

I looked them up and they looked to be solar powered, what extra mantels are you referring too. The guy at the local back packing store was showing me one of theses and I kept thinking to myself what a gimmick. Maybe I could be wrong.

Solar? Hmm. I'm running a compressed-fuel Brunton Lucy. Perhaps they've since changed to solar?

My group loved ours last summer while backpacking for deer. We hung it in the middle of camp . Just turned it off before bed and leave it up to charge the next day

I have this as well, really like it and it is very easy on fuel consumption.

I have this one as well.

But MUCH prefer this one:

I know the Lucy is said to be 65 W and hte Primus is 80W but I really think that frosted glass makes a HUGE difference in the amount of light it gives off. This is the one I'll be running next week in my tent on Kodiak. Warms it up nicely and gives off lot of light. I am sure there are other models out there just as good or better but these are the two isobutane lanterns I have and I have to say the Primus is far superior. ;)

might be a silly question but why not just grab the top off a $3 solar light for the yard from home depot or loses? set it out from of the tent during the day and you'll have a light to help get you home if you come back after dark, take it in the tent if you want to read. not a lot of light output but enough to be usable.

Fire Maple makes some of the lightest (and cheapest) gas lanterns and stoves. Their lantern weighs 4.7 oz and their lightest stove weighs 1.6 oz. Here is a link to some of the best pricing around on Fire Maple. https://www.fasttech.com/search?fire maple I purchased the FMS 300T from them. Fastech is also a good source for rechargeable batteries, flashlights etc.

Edit: Getting back to the original intent of this thread, Luminaid also makes a lightweight solar lantern. http://luminaid.com/

I thought the primus and Brunton were the same, aren't they they same company? This is the exact one I have http://www.buytelescopes.com/primus-camping-micronlantern?gclid=CKX-tqfqlsQCFQ4vaQodEmIAHg

I went with the mesh over the glass globe just because I feared breaking the glass. When I was research the glass globe was superior in light output but I couldn't get past that little fear bug telling me I'd break it, lol.

While they may be the same company the mesh around the mantel makes it much dimmer than the bright white globe around the mantel. The difference in brightness between the two is very obvious! I carry mine in the hard sided plastic case it came with so it hasn't broken yet ;)
