After striking out Monday and Tuesday this week (how rarely does it when you try to squeeze a hunt in real quick before work?) Wednesday I was able to seal the deal! I put some blinds surrounding a big bottom crop field last weekend. Including one along the ridge of where they had been roosting for a more aggressive set up. Always wanted to in the past, but always to scared to bump them off the roost trying to get in. Well yesterday I went for it, snuck in an extra hour early and put out my strutter over hen decoy. I waited until I heard the first gobble before I made a few tree yelps, and was pleased to hear a tom close by. Few minutes later he landed 150 yards from me. Unfortunately so did his hens. As I tried to entice them my way a new tom sounded off right behind me. Again and again he gobbled and remained silent noticing he was still on the roost. Trying to get me (the hen he heard) come to him. 20 minutes went by like this hammering and still I remained silent. Trying to get him to fly down to my set up I put in my mouth and cut and cackled rapidly and took my hat flapping it mimicking a hen flying down. He gobbled at it and pitched down about 10 seconds later. Landed and immediately walking straight away from me. I guessed him around 50 yards and didn’t waste any time pulling up my gun and taking the shot. Few flops later and I had one of my biggest birds on the ground! 23 lbs, 1 3/8 spurs and 3 beards of 10.5,9.5 and 8.5”
