I have a post 64 M70 in .308.

The rear of the bolt has rotated, causing me to not be able to close the bolt.

Everything I can find after googling talked about removing the bolt from the gun with the firing pin forward causing the problem. Thing is I didn't remove the bolt from the gun. Just had the bolt open in the truck while changing hunting spots. Got to the next spot and the bolt wouldn't close.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Rotate it back and it should go. Might have to pull the seat part on the bolt back to get it back on the ledge where it’s supposed to be

Not sure what you mean. It appears locked the way it is. I added some pictures.

I don’t remember if the safety can be engaged or not. Been awhile since I owned a m70 but you can Google how to disassemble a m70 bolt and watch a video. Pushing that back will be a pain until you figure out how to do it. Pretty sure I used a big flat screw driver but you can use a sturdy sharp table edge too.

This is what you need to slide back. The arrow shows the way it should need rotated. There’s a small indent that it’ll rest in. If you need help I can probably FaceTime you if you’ll send me a pm. 3C98A3AE-84AF-47CC-A40B-4A11965DB78F.jpeg82074452-1280-40B2-91BF-43181F99F95D.jpeg

I got it. Awesome man thank you.

I was looking for a pin or a button and that piece didn't look or feel like it was supposed to move....until I levered a screw driver on the bolt and slid it back. Worked perfect. Thanks again.

Happens to every M70 owner at some point. Easy fix. Sounds like you got it worked out. To clean your firing pin and spring, just put the safety in the middle position with the bolt in the receiver. Press the little button on the bolt shroud that allows it to rotate, and unscrew the shroud, pulling the pin assembly out. Just try not to bump the safety forward in the process, or it will drop the cocking piece and you’ll be in the same boat as the OP. (Which is really no big deal). Blast off the pin and spring with gun scrubber and LIGHTLY lube with a quality gun oil (not Rem Oil or WD40!). Grease the threads of the shroud and screw back into bolt body.

One of the many advantages to the M70! Tool less firing pin removal.

Btw, you don’t even need to lever the cocking piece back. Just twist it clockwise firmly to get it back into the fire position detent. Then put safety back to the mid position, and proceed as I stated below, pushing the button, as designed.

That circled part can be clamped in a vise, pull the nose of the bolt away from the cocking piece and rotate into the correct orientation.

Same works for cleaning it, just don't go crazy with the vise.

A piece of string out of a piece of 550 paracord tied around it will do the same thing.

That’s the Rem 700 method. No need to go to such lengths on a M70. Just twist it back.
