So, now that the CDOW has officially posted results I'm a goat hunter this year, and I believe I actually drew (I always doubt the backdoor results even though they've never been wrong). One of the things I'm really looking forward to is immersing myself in goat knowledge and lore. I've already started reading: The Beast the Color White (I think that's the title). Any other must read books on Mountain Goats or Mountain Goat hunting?

Thanks all, looking forward to learning more about these fascinating and elusive creatures.

Try these:

As far as hunting books an oldy but goody is "Hunting the Rocky Mountain Goat" by Duncan Gilchrist. It is hard to come by these days but if you ever find it I would definitely recommend picking it up.

It's a bit dense, but probably the best book you can read on mountain goats is "Mountain Goats: Ecology, Behavior, and Conservation of an Alpine Ungulate" by Marco Festa-Bianchet and Steeve D. Cote. This is the leading mountain goat research that pretty much every Fish and Game agency in North America is using for their mountain goat conservation strategy. Festa-Bianchet is the scientist who quantified the fact that transplanted goats (e.g. Utah, Nevada, Colorado) can be managed with higher harvest rates than native herds. It's a very interesting read.

As a Washington guy, "White Goats White Lies" by R. Lee Lyman is an interesting read as it talks about the transplanted goats in the Olympic National Park.

I always enjoy reading some of the older books written in past as well. Even though their science isn't the most up to date (obviously) they do make very interesting reads.
"Summer of the White Goat" - Paige Dixon
"The Rocky Mountain Goat" - Madison Grant
"Cruising the Cascades" - George Shields

Another hunting one which I've never actually read:
"The Mountain Goat Challenge, Adventures on Alaska's Coast Line" - Ace Sommerfield

Some more research papers regarding the Washington state mountain goats that you can download online if you are interested:

Does anyone have a copy of the Gilchrist book they'd like to sell for a "fair" value? Print price was $10.95. Best deal I can find is $65! I would pay about half that if someone was willing to make that deal. Let me know. Thanks!

I have read the first 2 Shane mentioned above. The second one is pretty good knowledge as he stated, mega number crunching. Highlighted quite a bit of it:cool:
