My brother and I started talking about a mule deer trip in 2012, I even made a thread about it. But life gets in the way and each year we put it off. We have finally decided that 2018 will be the year, the downside is we haven't been putting in for points anywhere so we are only going to have one at best.
We are from Oklahoma, but I have been in North Central MT for the last couple of years. We came out to SW MT in 2012 and he harvested a nice 5x5 bull with his bow, I was unsuccessful. Last season was my first I was able to hunt in MT and I was also unsuccessful, though hopefully I can change that this year.
We would like to do a backpack hunt, maybe 5 days, Archery. We would like to get away from the crowds and enjoy the experience as much as the hunt. We have talked talked about it and are pretty open to where we go. We would like to have as much chance at success as possible, not looking for 200" deer. The opportunity to see and stalk bucks is what we are looking for, quantity over quality in terms of inches.
I know it's late in the game but we would like to buy a point this year if possible, we just don't know where. I am also not smart enough to figure out how to read the draw results and figure out what my chances are in certain units as a non resident. The quotas and percentages and how many points it takes are a bit overwhelming. So any advice on states, units, or how to figure out our best chances of drawing would be much appreciated so we can at least get in for a point this year. Feel free to PM me. TIA.
