My Idaho moose hunt

This past spring I learned that I had drawn a moose tag for north Idaho after years of unsuccessful applications. I immediately started scouring over maps and talks to locals and biologists in the area.

I picked the first week 11/1-11/7 of the season to hunt.

The first few days were spent covering lots of country with only a couple cows spotted.

This cow had a calf we couldn’t see. As my son and I went down the trail. This cow stomped and charged us to 15 feet. Definitely a puckering moment.

With only cows being seen, I decided to relocate to the far north portion of the unit and check out some clear cuts at higher elevation.

As we were driving along an old logging road, I spotted a moose feeding on the edge of the trail. Stopping to glass, I saw it had paddles. With only having 2 more days to hunt, I decided it was a bull I was willing to shoot. And having my 13 year old son with me and 79 year old grandpa, it was in a perfect spot for them to watch and get the meat out easy.

I got to within 100 yards and put a round in his shoulder. He ran about 25 yards and laid down. He was laying quartering away, I quickly got a rest and hit him again, grazing his hind and setting the round into his shoulder again. My bull was dead.

It was a hunt of a lifetime for my son, grandpa, and I. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

Everything is big on a moose!!!!

Very fortunate to have a full freezer and memories that will last a lifetime as this was my bucket list animal to harvest in my home state.

Great job! Moose aren't nearly as easy to find as they were 20 years ago. That will be some delicious eating. Success with family is always a huge bonus.

I definitely learned that this last week. They weren’t around every corner or in every clear cut . We definitely had to work for it. Big thanks to the few locals I talked to for the help!

Moose hunting is fun but a lot of pressure too. I got one in WY last year. Congrats on the bull! Mine tastes better than deer or elk I think.

That’s awesome, moose hunting is the best! I’d love to get a shiras moose at some point, that would complete the moose slam for me.

This was just the start of a slam for me. But I’m hooked now.

Never had any intention of trying to do a slam, may never happen but I got one in eastern Canada many years ago and since I moved to
AK I’ve gotten several. I’m sort of considering Utah to finish the slam.

Awesome, great experience and reward. Pretty sure I know that area. they're getting harder to find. I've seen a few 50+ inch Shiras in Unit 1 myself. Very happy for ya and the family, my dream tag as well.

Sounds like you had an adventures, filled the freezer, and made some memories with 3 generations. If that isn't a successful hunt, I don't know what is!

Did you happen to weigh the meat after it was packaged? I'd be curious to know what the takeaway was on the freezer for a moose that size. I'm sorry but I couldn't help but think of you when I saw a big 40+" bull this morning😂

Edit-Should say processed, not packaged. I bet everyone weighs each single package😆
