This past spring I learned that I had drawn a moose tag for north Idaho after years of unsuccessful applications. I immediately started scouring over maps and talks to locals and biologists in the area.
I picked the first week 11/1-11/7 of the season to hunt.
The first few days were spent covering lots of country with only a couple cows spotted.
This cow had a calf we couldn’t see. As my son and I went down the trail. This cow stomped and charged us to 15 feet. Definitely a puckering moment.
With only cows being seen, I decided to relocate to the far north portion of the unit and check out some clear cuts at higher elevation.
As we were driving along an old logging road, I spotted a moose feeding on the edge of the trail. Stopping to glass, I saw it had paddles. With only having 2 more days to hunt, I decided it was a bull I was willing to shoot. And having my 13 year old son with me and 79 year old grandpa, it was in a perfect spot for them to watch and get the meat out easy.
I got to within 100 yards and put a round in his shoulder. He ran about 25 yards and laid down. He was laying quartering away, I quickly got a rest and hit him again, grazing his hind and setting the round into his shoulder again. My bull was dead.
It was a hunt of a lifetime for my son, grandpa, and I. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.
Everything is big on a moose!!!!
Very fortunate to have a full freezer and memories that will last a lifetime as this was my bucket list animal to harvest in my home state.
