So I could’ve done this way better by getting an actual starting weight and velocities etc. but I got anxious and didn’t plan well.

I got a Tikka T3x in 300 wsm and figured I’d document a bit here.

Currently I’ve done:
  • cut barrel from 24” down to 21”
  • painted the stock
  • installed a Limbsaver
  • Installed a LA bolt stop
  • Installed a Ti bold handle
  • Mounted a loner scope in Sportsmatch rings

Weight currently is 6-6oz without the spare scope. Trying to work backwards I’m figuring I dropped 5oz from trimming the barrel. Plan is to run a SWFA ultralight (hopefully) and an Ultra 7. Which should put the weight with glass and can right at 7 1/2 lb.

Plan is to shoot hand loaded 215 Berger’s out of it and after a trip to the range looks like the shorter barrel even at a 1:11 twist will push them just fine. Being at 6000’ helps I’m sure.

Again I don’t have actual data from the gun before I cut the barrel but I ran 2 boxes of ammo off the shelf through it for velocity numbers.

Federal Premium with the 185 Hybrid Hunters box said 2950, my average was 2871 for a 79 fps difference.

Hornady Precision Hunter with the 200 gn ELD-X box said 2820, my average was 2749 for a 71 FPS difference. Also shot a .90 moa 5 shot group with these at 100 yards.

I did an OCW test with the 215 Bergers and think I’ve settled on 67.2 gn of RL26. That 3 shot was 0.68. I’ll post target pictures later, had a slightly better group at 1.5 gn less but this is the first gun I’ve shot bigger than a .25-06 so I don’t think the .1 moa difference is the ammos fault.

I’ll get out this weekend and load some up and down from 67.2 gn then chrono what load I decide on.

I'm trying to decide between a 300 WSM and rebarreling to 25 PRC... Your success with the 215s is promising. If they don't work out, the new 205 EOL should do the trick.

I have a 23" 1:9.5 300wsm carbon barrel from hells canyon. 67.5 and 68gr rl26 have me @ 2830ish. My barrel only has 50 rounds through it. I found pressure @ 69gr 2890fps. Are you using a longer magazine with the LA bolt stop? My rifle has the 3.4" billet wsm magazine from Hells canyon and a long bolt stop as it was originally a 7mag. I have a tbac ultra 7 in jail right now.

Sounds like we’ll have similar rifles. Thought about going semi-custom with a different barrel but cutting this one should get me 9/16 threads and I have a few other projects that could use the money.

Here is my original OCW test. I’m going to load up a few more at smaller increments around that 67.2, shoot those tomorrow. Then I’ll get back to the range Sunday to get some velo numbers on the load I choose. Would love to be in the high 27xx range.

Realize I didn’t answer your question. Right now I’m putting them in single shot, but will order a HCA magazine. I’m loading them .010 from the lands.

Decided on 67.5 gn of RL-26. Norma brass, Federal Primers. Ended up with a couple 1/2 moa groups at 100 yards with that. Ran 10 over the magnetospeed and came up with 2785 fps average with ES 21 and SD of 7.

Gonna pull it apart and have the CB brake put on, some other minor gunsmithing, and decide on a scope. That should put me into summer and time to get things dialed in with a few hundred more rounds at varying distances.

Any updates? Looking at building this same rifle
I'll second that. Really don't like the 11" twist on the tikkas which is the only reason I don't have one in 300wsm now.

That and how you're liking the 21" barrel.

Could you get away with 1/2-28 threads?

Any chance you've shot those heavy bullets with that twist rate at sea level?
