So I could’ve done this way better by getting an actual starting weight and velocities etc. but I got anxious and didn’t plan well.
I got a Tikka T3x in 300 wsm and figured I’d document a bit here.
Currently I’ve done:
Weight currently is 6-6oz without the spare scope. Trying to work backwards I’m figuring I dropped 5oz from trimming the barrel. Plan is to run a SWFA ultralight (hopefully) and an Ultra 7. Which should put the weight with glass and can right at 7 1/2 lb.
Plan is to shoot hand loaded 215 Berger’s out of it and after a trip to the range looks like the shorter barrel even at a 1:11 twist will push them just fine. Being at 6000’ helps I’m sure.
Again I don’t have actual data from the gun before I cut the barrel but I ran 2 boxes of ammo off the shelf through it for velocity numbers.
Federal Premium with the 185 Hybrid Hunters box said 2950, my average was 2871 for a 79 fps difference.
Hornady Precision Hunter with the 200 gn ELD-X box said 2820, my average was 2749 for a 71 FPS difference. Also shot a .90 moa 5 shot group with these at 100 yards.
I did an OCW test with the 215 Bergers and think I’ve settled on 67.2 gn of RL26. That 3 shot was 0.68. I’ll post target pictures later, had a slightly better group at 1.5 gn less but this is the first gun I’ve shot bigger than a .25-06 so I don’t think the .1 moa difference is the ammos fault.
I’ll get out this weekend and load some up and down from 67.2 gn then chrono what load I decide on.
