I recently purchased a Sako S20 that I need a scope for. I will be using the gun to hunt deer in the Southeast and Midwest. I am going elk hunting next fall in Colorado. It will be used for deer in open fields and wooded areas 95% of the time. The farthest shots I will take will be 400 yards. I really like the Zeiss Conquest V4 in 6x24x50. I looked thru the scope at Cabela's at a deer at 25 yards and on 6 power it seemed just fine. Is this too much scope or is it okay for what I want to do?

6-24 is an outrageous amount of overkill for 400 yards. 6x would be plenty.

I couldn’t agree more. A lot of people over-scope rifles in my opinion. I have made consecutive hits on prairie dogs at 1100 yards with a 14x. I don’t own a scope over 14x. Just my $.02

It’s a great scope, but for 1000 yards, not 400! Way overkill in cost and weight. Go with the V4 in 3-12x44!

Thank you for the responses so far. Which Zeiss V4 reticle should I get for hunting deer and elk?

Should I choose 4x16x44 or 4x16x50? I figure the illuminated 50 gives me more low light shooting opportunities. Thoughts?

Don't buy until you look at the price of the Conquest V4 at Red Hawk Rifles. You will save about $300 vs Cabelas. I have the 4-16X50 with the Zbi reticle and will be buying more from RHR.
