So I am having a bit of a breakdown right now. Hunting season cannot come fast enough I definitely need some time in the duck blind. My puppy (st bernard\newfundland\lab at 9 weeks} broke her back leg 4 weeks ago and was supposed to have surgery but we cannot afford it being quoted 6k and amputation didn't seem right being this is a dog that will have hip issues in the future anyways so the vet decided instead of putting her down they would set the brake and splint it. Good news kennel rest for several weeks and a 3 hour drive every week to have the splint re wrapped and have everything checked no problem, till last week, got home Friday afternoon everything is good, Saturday morning we woke up and she had slipped out of the splint we ran to the fleet farm and got some coban and rewrapped it best we could, went down yesterday and had another rewrap and everything seemed ok this morning but just now I took her out to go to the bathroom and found the splint had slipped half way off and she is in a kennel that we have to feed her in backwards and she can't even turn around and has a hard cone on so even if she can turn she couldn't get to her leg. On top of this I am trying to finish my honey do list by splitting and stacking my last cord of wood for the winter and sheetrock a section of our basement so she can set the up the exercise room. After about 10 logs my maul handle broke and then I went to fit a piece of sheetrock and found that none of my walls are square which I know I can just cut the sheetrock to match my studs and be fine but it just feels like nothing I have done this summer has gone the way it should........ Sorry for the non related rant just had to vent somehow

Not a dog, but I have done several splints on livestock and they have healed up fine. Might be you need to wrap the leg up further to help to immobilize the leg. Not a fun situation at all. Hope for the best for you. Sounds like things are just going bad to worse.

Come on 2021.

Back legs are tough. $6k seems very high for a fracture repair in a puppy. However, depending on the fracture, I guess it's possible. I'd maybe see about a 2nd opinion and quote for repair. You may get a better deal if you take to the University of Minnesota teaching hospital. Food for thought. Splinting back legs typically goes poorly.

Sorry that you're dealing with this. When it rains, it pours.

Sorry to hear. Sounds like the dog is the biggest source of stress, understandable. Don't let a maul handle and unsquared sheet rock ruin your day. Get a new maul, and the exercise room can be used without sheetrock. Get second opinion on dog.

Take a deep breath man. Relax. The dog will be fine and the wall will get finished. Then hunting season will be here and you will have forgot all about this post.

Breathe brother... have had those days... especially this year.
Was started down that path this afternoon until my oldest started discussing the election and I realized we are not raising a drone. It’s the small things.

Feel your pain, my pup broke his back leg at the knee requiring 4 pins, at the time I was in way over my head on a remodel..... 6k though is ridiculous unless it’s crazy complicated. Mine was 2k. It was Done through and ortho vet specialist. Just curious,What type of break?

I pray
That 2020 is preparing us for something worse to come!

Im not trying to be harsh, but your maul and sheetrock are pretty insignificant in the big picture. As for the dog, if you decide to give up on it, find someone who is willing and able financially to take over before you decide to play god and kill it over a broken leg...….yeah Im a little sensitive when it comes to dogs. I value them over just about all humans. Have beer or a drink. Get a good nights sleep. Maybe eat a Xanax or smoke a joint if that's your thing. Itll all be ok tomorrow.

Venting important.
check out Care Credit. Basically, a dirt cheap credit for vets, dental, optometrists etc.
I dropped 8k on 2 TPLO surgeries for my dog 2 years ago.
3 year payment plan available or I did 1 year per knee, 0% interest.
Edit: hate it for you. Best of luck

I feel for you, it will get better. In 2002 my Dad passed away, a month later my dog passed away, a couple months later the engine blew in my truck, and a month later the transmission went out. That was the worst year I've ever had. But, it gets better, it has to right? Just take things one day at a time. Find something positive to focus on in the future and spend you days thinking/planning for that and you'll get through it.

Sorry to hear about your challenges. Do you have any vet schools near you? I drove 8hrs to bring my dog to a vet school, they charged me a fraction of what the local vet wanted for a operation and they had the best of everything,it was worth the long trip for me. Good luck

The closest school is the university of mn and they were 7k for surgery. I didn't even know about pet insurance till a week after paying 700 for the splint initially. After this I will be getting insurance on any pet I have in the future and going forward. Both my retriever and this puppy have a quote now that once I get back to work and can afford it will be getting just in case
