Had my first experience winter camping with my boys a few weeks ago. My issue was staking in my Sawtooth. There was about 3 inches of snow and the ground was frozen. I could pound the stakes in with my axe however I figured I would never get them back out. I hammered in the rear three stakes and the rest were put in slightly in the frozen ground. When cleaning up, all three stakes at the back broke in half trying to get them out (msr groundhogs). The other stakes were fine however the tent was not tight due to the snowfall and the stakes giving in.
What is the best option? Deadman doesn’t seem plausible since the ground is frozen and there is not enough snow. Any experience with the half moon stakes with holes in them so the ice can freeze around the stake? Or is that just for deep snow as well?
