I just wanted to put this out there as I will be headed to Nevada solo come August. This will be my first time hunting NV and in any state other than Idaho for that matter. I have already had some guys reach out to me and offer some very helpful information. I have a pretty good start doing what I can from home and even with fuel prices I still plan to make a trip south to scout, although the way things are going I do have to consider if the "juice is worth the squeeze" for this particular hunt. At the very least I will get there a day or two before season. A couple general questions I still have are: should I expect to deal with mosquito's come August 10th in the higher and mid elevations where there is moisture? There will be a full moon on August 12th, now honestly I normally don't pay much mind to this when hunting mule deer later or for elk for that matter although I do notice its effects. I am just wondering with this being an early/hot hunt if this will really put a damper on daytime activity to the extent I have a hard time finding bucks even during prime time. This has me considering holding off to start my hunt until about the 15th part of my thought with that is might miss the opening season rush of hunters but on the flip side not get first crack at deer that haven't been bumped. I have both horses and pack goats but the more I consider things the more I might just backpack, I don't really want to haul the horses that far nor be stuck to water and the goats don't really work well solo as it is highly frowned upon to leave them alone, if I had a hunting partner I would most definitely bring the goats. I have a full sized diesel pickup and dirtbike but again with fuel prices I am honestly considering bringing my trusty Toyota Corolla  its more capable than most would think but if the roads are anything like I have seen in similar country I worry that might be a mistake and I just need to eat the fuel bill. Last I am trying to decide when would be best for a scouting trip, looking at snow pack data its still bellow average so would it be safe to assume I could access all but the highest elevations by then?

I'd greatly appreciate any feedback I get and feel free to PM me, If there is anyone else with the tag that would be interested I would even consider teaming up if it was a good fit.

Thanks!

Josh,

Hey man I’m also heading up there for this hunt. Drew it out of the second draw. Probably going to get up there a day or two before the season starts and scout around a few areas I’ve hunted with my dad back in the day and some other ones. I will say I don’t think we should have to worry about snow in August but you never know. If you wanna link up just let me know.

It will be a zoo up in the Ruby's with guys around every corner that first week but beautiful country and fun hunt. I wouldn't worry about mosquitos, in fact I can't recall ever seeing one up there. Bucks will be on their feet at first light and late evening. During the day glass into the shade and you'll certainly find bedded deer. No need to worry about snow pack. Personally I'd take the pickup and leave Corolla at home. Best of luck!

I wouldn’t worry about mosquitoes, I’ve hunted the adjacent units in August and never saw one. Right close to water there would be flies, but I never got bit. I also wouldn’t worry about the moon. The deer are in their summer range, they should be highly visible comparatively to the later seasons. Finding them usually isn’t the issue, whether on their feet or not, getting to them….. that’s another story!

Hey thanks! Anymore I have gotten to where I enjoy the process of planning and preparing for hunts and scouting almost as much as the hunt itself..almost. Nice to have goals to work towards and something to look forward to.

I never have hunted NV. Drew area 10 like you. Im driving from Springfield, OR. Snow shouldn't be an issue but lightning could sneak into that high country. Snakes are also something to keep you on point. Looks to be water in many of the areas.

Im not convinced on footing the bill for scouting yet so may just show up 2-3 days before hand.

The biologist suggested that those without 4wd would be limited on areas they can actually effectively get to. So bring spare tires if going off pavement.

Holler at me if you wanna compare info.

I drew the October muzzleloader on as an alternate by supprise. I hunted the Overland Lake area with horses in the past but since this will more than likely be a solo hunt was hoping for some advise on access along the western side probably around the Jiggs area and Northeast of there. Is there anywhere anyone can suggest with side by side access and then hike in from there? Thanks

Good luck on your trip. Long story short but I was out of options on hunting out west as Lady Luck had not been on my side through all the regular draws. At least not until yesterday when I picked up the same tag that was returned through the First Come, First Served reissue system. I've never hunted Nevada, much less stepped foot in the area, so my learning curve is gonna be steep but at least I'll be getting to hunt. I'm heading out at the end August through the end of the season. Would love to know how you do and what your experiences are like. Best of luck!

Hey man!

I meant to reach out to ya before the season! Hope you found yourself a deer. I tagged out two days ago. Covered a lot of country but happy with the deer I took. If you want shoot me a message and I’ll give ya some insight if you haven’t tagged out yet.

Good luck, jblam! I'll be there the last few days of this month and the first week of September. Never been in the unit, much less hunted anywhere in Nevada but I'm looking forward to the experience and can't wait to get out there.

Hi Josh...good luck man.

I have an archery tag in 171-3 and am solo hunting it as well. I've scouted it now 3 times. Hunted it once since the season opened. General feedback:
fair amounts of rain - critters seemed to be up high imho. pushing 8-9k elevation. At least where I have been in 173. They aren't being pushed to water...so they are harder to find. Days are in the 80's. Nights are in the 50's maybe. Water is an issue in my unit. That is a MAJOR concern for me. With the rain...it's good for the muleys but that has come just in this last couple of weeks. I have had luck finding all kinds of animals...but have really had to hoof it way in to find bucks. So far I haven't had much success honestly. Hoping to get out there at least one more time before the season ends. I feel like I need more than a three day weekend to do it right. Just my opinion and I am no expert.

mosquitoes .... non-issue where I am at but you're further north and east of my unit. I'm in central NV.

Not sure how helpful this is....but good luck!
