I am thinking about building some new elk arrows.

Here are the weights of my current components

125 Slick tricks, washer, Broadhead Adapter Ring, Aluminum insert- 155 grains

X nock, vanes, wrap 41 grains

Total current weight is 425 grains (27" arrow).
I'm going to stick with this Broadhead.

I want an inch longer arrow (28") and am looking at Easton Axis which are heavier than my current although I think I'll lose 5 gr on the tip insert.

I shoot 68.5 lbs for about 275fps now but will crank it to max of a little over 70lbs for new arrows. Not sure what I'll lose in speed.

My question (finally) do I want 300 or 340 spine? I figure 300s would weigh 490 and 340s would weigh 460. Sound like a good setup? Also I want to keep this arrow if I upgrade to a new faster bow

I shoot 73# with a 27.5 Draw. I found that stiffer has been consistently more accurate for my set up. When I set up the Axis (27.5, 4 vane, X nock with Shuttle T's) I went between the 300 and and 340 and I think the real analysis should have been the 300 and 260.

490gr is even better. IMO, That 450-500gr range is a good arrow weight for all around hunting.

I've been shooting slightly overspined arrows for decades now....never had a tuning issue and can get 2" groups with BH's at 50 yds when I'm shooting well. Plus the heavier spine makes for a stronger hunting arrow. Win win.

I would suggest a 300 spine would be best but you could get a 340 to tune.

I'm currently shooting 390 spine ACC arrows and they shoot well, but as stated are 27"

Need more context. What’s your current draw?

I’d never recommend lengthening arrows for weight or for any reason other than your draw went longer. The shorter arrow bucks the wind better and is easier to tune. I’d spine up and add point weight. You’ll get more gpi with that setup plus the ability to throw a bit more point weight.

My draw length is 27 in. My current arrows tip just barely comes past the end of my arrow shelf. I want the new arrows cut basically at the end of the arrow shelf to put that broadhead in front of my hand. That's the whole reason I'm doing this, I've never liked the broadhead sitting above my hand.

I would do the 300 spine. I am a 28" draw @ 72lb and just switched from 340s to the 300 axis. Broadhead groups tightened up immediately from 40-70yds. My arrows are 523 grains - elk setup.

I was actually wrong on this, my current arrows are 26", I'm looking to go to 27". Calculated ballistics:

340 arrow
453 grs
268 fps

Distance (yds) Drop (in)
0 0
20 -10
30 -23
40 -41
50 -65
60 -96
70 -132

300 arrow
485 grs
257fps
Distance (yds) Drop (in)
0 0
20 -11
30 -25
40 -44
50 -70
60 -104
70 -141

KE and momentum look pretty close. Is there an app that would show me a pin spread comparison? Or can anyone give me an idea of how much a difference in pin spread is?

Why not keep the same arrow length and switch to either a 50 or 75gr brass HIT? Or you could add impact collars? You would also be way over spined with that short of an Axis 300. Easton’s spine chart recommends a 400 at 26” with your draw weight. If you’re wanting a stiffer spine specifically for extra weight, shoot a 5mm FMJ.

I have a 27in DL. I am shooting Axis 300s with a 26.6in arrow (shaft only) that weigh about 525gr. I have been playing with this setup in different ways for over a year and like the shorter and heavier set ups. Here is what the spine app says the numbers are.EE993786-4DE9-419D-A8ED-D17150078032.png
