I was wondering if anyone had any information on hunting barbary sheep in new mexico. The over the counter license. Any information will help. What unit to hunt, equipment, hunting access etc. Thanks so much.

Tough, tough, tough hunt. Good Glass, Good boots. Lots and Lots
of walking in beautiful country. Cold, Windy. Animals few and far
between. Bring water and a flat shooting rifle. Don't be picky about
what you shoot.
Better yet, save your money and do a guided free range hunt in TX.

They tend to live in rough and rocky country. Prepare to be miserable after long days of walking up and down canyons made of rock and not seeing anything. My experience is all in unit 32. Also, they can be anywhere and have excellent eyesight. Be in great physical condition.

You are correct, which is why I mentioned the unit. I was only writing on behalf of my knowledge of hunting the species, not the OTC units.

The only ones I would recommend for a NR are the draw units.
OTC units are strictly for hunter opportunity and a way for G and F to make revenue.
They can be found but it is probably one of the hardest hunts in the state.

It isn’t THAT hard. If you can glass, hike, and shoot, you can do it. I recommend 15s. They make a huge difference in finding them. Good luck.

Couple of my 4 OTC rams, just pick a unit and sendddddd itttt. But the draw hunts are a much smarter idea if you don’t know the areas at all.

I’ve been lucky in the OTC units my first two times. Lots of fun, will be back at It at some point this year. Lots Of glassing, and good hiking boots. Be prepared for a tough/long pack out. Haven’t been able to notch my tag on a big ram, just 20-22” rams. Hopefully this will be the year.
