While being a resident is nice, I would live to be rid of the outfitter pool and have a 90/10 split. Also, I will still be paying nearly $700 to apply for all species except ibex and javelina. So it's not nearly the "free ride" seemed from the outside.
Is that $700 from credit card interest?

There is actually really good draw odds for mule deer in a lot of units in NM, some with solid harvest success. It's a long way from Georgia though. It's not guaranteed by any measure, I have been putting in for mule deer in a unit I drew elk in a couple years ago. Draw success for non-residents has ranged from 40-60% for the season I want, but I have blanked on it twice still. Its a unit that is close enough to home that I can scout it on a weekend trip, and I have been in the unit hunting elk and twice for spring turkeys. NM isn't know for giant mule deer, but I saw a few bucks and found sheds from deer that I would be more than happy with myself.

I'm with you tlowell. Applications are in for every species but antelope and javelina. Last year I went 0 for 8 on applications (I applied for antelope last year). If I go 0 for 7 this year maybe it will sting less?

One reason is it adds more dollars to the local economy.

I think if New Mexicans had their way the whole state would be socialist. Tax the rich and the extraction industries, get as many fed dollars you can, and get as many people as you possibly can on subsidized handouts.

wait that’s what they already do.

but there’s no correlation between that mentality and the fact it’s the second poorest state in the union by almost any metric.

If I was a New Mexican I’d be pissed that 10% of my tags get taken away. They say it’s to give out jobs. bullshit.

Coming from the state legislature that gets billions from oil and gas.

I think it depends upon region of the state. Out here in the eastern portions, residents tend to be very conservative minded. Those folks are overridden by the population centers of Albuquerque and Santa Fe, which are very liberal. It is a strange state for sure, and many times extremely frustrating.

Get rid of that Outfitter Pool,,,,,people can always hire an outfitter AFTER they draw.

Oh no you didnt

they’ll be people starving if you took that away. Starving I say.

you think walmart in silver is bad with bums looking for a handout. Wait till all the good paying guide jobs get taken away.

laughable. And the states sitting on just under 8 billion oil/gas tax revenue 2019.

I'm in Florida, so a trip to New Mexico for a hunt is a pretty big ordeal. That being the case I usually only go after pretty hard to draw units. I haven't gotten lucky yet!
