My son and his hitting buddy had a Barbary sheep hunt this February. The hunt started on the day that the Artic cold front hit our state. On the first day we hiked 9.75 miles in some crazy weather. Everything was frozen, including the water In our packs. and the fog was so bad we couldn’t see 100 yards all day long. We weren’t able to find any sheep that weekend but we still had a few more days to hunt later in the week. Here are some pics of that terrain when the Artic front hit.

My sons hunting partner was able to get back out there a few days before me and my son were. The weather was going to be way better than the weekend before. They located some sheep over a mile away close to sun down. They were able to make a stalk to with in 200 yards and Diego was able to make the shot.

They brought the sheep home, hung out a day and then headed back out with me and my son to help us fill his tag. We worked out butts off not seeing any sheep but on the last day we had to hunt we changed areas.

We hiked into a new area 3.5 miles and I glassed up some sheep. It was windy so we hand to make a 3/4 mile hike up over a mountain and circle around to get in range and have good wind. They still ended up winding us because of the gusty winds. They blew out over a ridge but we were able to hustle over the ridge and catch up for a shot. We crawled up behind a bush and my son was able to make a 230 shot and follow up shot. Both hits were good but the ram soaked up that .243 pretty well.

We had a pretty tough pack out but the boys did great. They are both wrestlers and play baseball on travel teams so they are use to grinding hard. We ended up hiking about 25 miles total. Those are the only two groups of sheep we saw the entire hunt. It was a tough hunt but a great hunt.

What a great hunt and story. Congrats! I was also out there that first weekend hiking in the snow and cold. Found a great ram on day three after the same fog you had day 1, and a raging blizzard on day 2.

I was out on the rim last February and had similar conditions. It can get brutally cold with that wet wind. Great job!
