New to the GPS game, Garmin Foretrex 301

As the title says I'm new to the whole idea of packing a gps. I'm a Eastern hunter and never really needed a gps to make it to my stand or blind. Recently I bought a box of gear from a guy locally and in it was a 301 Foretrex. Can anyone give me some insight on this? It's new in the box still. I'm aware it's an older model and discontinued but outside of that I cant find much.

Used, abused, and loved to death by the high speed crowd in combat zones. I have the 401 and think of it as a sort of electronic compass in that I like to have a paper map to go with it.

I keep my 401 in my back up nav gear bag (401, compass, paper map) when in backcountry.

Thanks for the insight. So, outside of an electronic compass what else is it capable of doing? Can it place waypoints? Say plot camp and wherever I wonder I can always follow back to camp?
