Going on Year 3 of elk hunting northern Alberta elk, the last two years we been up we've encountered elk, but feel our timing may of been to early. Aug 25-5 the last two years as they weren't talking and wanted nothing to do with cow calls either. This year we are heading up towards Rycroft spirit river area September 5- 14 Same area we been previous years. Not looking for areas or locations. We been more main land crown around farm fields trying to catch them coming on & off from grazing. Should we move to valleys and streams that feed into the big three rivers up their? But just some tips as theirs lot of info out their for hunting elk in the mountains in the states, but nothing really towards dense forest and flat lands (flats meaning not mountains) of northern Alberta, we don't have a boat to float the river. So just wanna know what tips you fellas or helpful advice to help with these creatures on the crown lands of Alberta.

Thanks in advance.

This will seem odd coming from an Australian but I was in that area hunting bears in the September period you mention in 2018. Heard a few bugles. Saw a moose in the timber near a rough road crossing on the spirit river. Bears were working fields close to bush edges. Farmers seemed very friendly and approachable for access.
Met a husband and wife team from Edmonton who hunt the area every year. They seemed to have had some success on moose and elk judging by their photos.

Sorry can't be of more help than that really.

Nice bears in that area.

Yes you are early if you want the elk to talk, but with that said it doesn't mean you can't kill an elk. Time spent in the bush is the best way to get one. The elk up there are patternable so spend time figuring out where they go when they come off the field and sit and wait. Or still hunt into their bedding areas. Don't drive roads and if you are persistent you will be successful.
