I read that thread - great trip and write-up both!

Used to commute by bicycle to work every day of the week year around; was in the best shape ever riding between 4000-5000 miles per year between the 18-20 mile commute and weekend recreation rides.

Commute now is only about 9 miles rounds trip and not worth the bike; I do try and ruck it with a lightweight pack. I carry my change of clothes/shoes and some of my basic hunting gear using my hunting pack. I do it in about 70-75 minutes. Unfortunately, it is mostly flat and fully paved. Stretching and basic core maintenance to stave off persistent back issues.

I need to up the game based on others here. I'm only mid-50's.

Low intensity, long duration and very frequent cardio. Lighter weight rucking. 20% of bodyweight or so....

Deadlifts, rdl's, good mornings, dips, pull ups, chin ups, ohp, ass to grass back squats, leg presses and weighted carries.
dam wish could still do pull-ups I'm afraid those days are gone. tendonitis as set in so bad can't even pick up a coffee cup or shake hands. paying for 30 years of baseball and other crap. trying to get it to heal without being able to shoot my bow aint happening have to get ready for wy mule deer this year somehow.

Someone posted about a book called convict conditioning. I purchased it I believe the progression of the workouts might help your recovery. Don’t quit.

appreicate it!! that isnt gonna happen! Cant afford to have a mule deer hunt in WY this year should draw after 12 years cant stop!! I am worried about the bow part though going to take a couple weeks off and keep at the cardio. Worse case I can use my buddies crossbow but rather not.

Spent every day in April shoveling snow....many places I could not get my plow.
When I started shoveling April 1, I would shovel with a timer for 15 minutes,
the an hour break. By April 30, it was shovel for an hour, then 30 minutes break.
Also discovered 3 cracked coil springs when I changed out the snow tires to
summer tires yesterday. My cedar strip canoe survived 30 alaska winters but not
this past winter's snowpack. Felt great to get back to hiking this morning.

That’s a workout, I use to shovel concrete on a foundation crew. That will beat you up real fast. Shoveling for 1 hour straight is a true workout

Dang!!, thats humpin it Warden.

It's the weekend of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Open. I've toed the line the last seven years, but this year they really changed things up- went from ~ 90-110 mile event to close to 150 miles. It also has two options this year, one ends in Missoula (starting clear from the East Front) which rafters would probably enjoy, folks w/o rafts would suffer from many miles of walking roads which is a non-starter for me. The other option has the same start but you "touch" a spot in the middle of the Wilderness (headwater of the SF of the Flathead) and then back. Mileage is roughly the same depending on the route(s) you choose. The idea of retracing my steps for ~ 75 miles has no appeal, making it any kind of loop back adds 30-40+ miles making in the neighborhood of 200 miles.

Soooo... my buddy and I instead picked out a 70-ish mile route that we'll start with the rest of the guys but head northwest (vs west/southwest) into some country (Badger/Two Med) we haven't spent much time in. Should be a good trip, but anticipate a lot (lot) of snow :)

I'm 59. Last year I did the Kuiu get ready for elk hunting workout https://www.kuiu.com/blogs/hunting-...4-ecf0-31ce-9d5e-9997629fd783&et_rid=21176900
Glad I did it definitely helped. I like the Mountain Tactical workouts as well he has new ones for over 45, over 50, over 55 and over 60, I normally have to modify as they are hard. https://mtntactical.com/
I also highly recommend LMNT electrolyte rehydration and Advocare night time recovery - these have really made a difference with nighttime soreness and leg cramps after a hard workout or long run or ruck.

I run year round except when I head north for a few months of guiding. My winter avalanche work adds to my fitness but to be honest, staying fit has always been part of my life. Yes I hit the gym 3 to 4 times a week for strength/power.

69 y/o in a month. 5 mile brisk walk with the gsp, one hour on the bike riding a circuit at a moderate pace into the wind. 100 crunches, 80 pushups, 40 lateral leg lifts on each side. 7 days a week. 2 meals a day. Ran 3 miles a day at a 7 min pace for 30 yrs until a torn meniscus and Tamsulosin put a stop to that. As earlier commenter mentioned avoiding injuries is the key. Was worried my exercise intolerance was cardiac rather than medication. Had a stress echo with a treadmill. Got to a 200 heart rate and 210 systolic blood pressure with 69% ejection fraction so the pump is fine. Going to a mule packing school in NM in September followed by a fall full of hunts through December. Avoid injuries.

Dam that is fantastic, I’m 63 years old, and train 3-4 times a week. Your daily standard is something we should all strive for at your age. Great job
