The logistics in the winter can prove to be difficult, heavy snow load and difficult travel. Why not head to the desert?

The draw archery draw hunt in Unit 1 is only part of the issue causing 27 to be so damn crowded.
1st -with the virus issues a whole lot more people have been camping all over the place...
2nd- The White Mtn Apache reservation has been completely closed to entry so all those campers and fishermen have been right here.
3rd - Been extra hot this year in the deserts.

However I've been out checking 3 different cameras over the opening weekend of archery deer and once you leave the road there are no people. They're just running all over the place in their motorized hunters wheelchairs and seldom get out and walk.

Every weekend since May has been like a holiday weekend. Come on winter.
I'm worried winter won't be any better! Every condo, hotel, and air bnb in Pinetop is going to be booked all winter... Sunrise will be impossible to get onto if they keep it up, and if they open! Good time to not be a road hunter!

They may not even have Sunrise open. Most of the summer the whole reservation was closed, they opened up late summer but a couple weeks ago the Hondah casino closed again as 2 employees caught covid.
Are you from the area?

Get up early, get out of the truck, hike up to a high point, and glass. We saw 160+ deer during our 6 day hunt. There are deer everywhere. We hunted all over the unit.

That’s what I want to hear. I’ll be hunting the unit for both mule deer and bear in august/September. Looking forward to exploring the unit. Hopefully it’s not too hot.

Any advice or suggestions on what to expect for the unit in late August/early September? I'll be going for mule deer and possibly black bear during that timeframe this year. It'll be my first time in the unit.

You can’t…..unless he has an archery only tag he purchased last fall for the 2023 season? If so, it’s not a ‘mule deer tag’…..just a deer tag (Coues or Mule depending on unit).

How can you already have a tag? It's not OTC in August and draw results haven't come out yet?

My apologies for how I described my tag - yes, I have an archery unit tag I purchased for the 2023 season. It's just a deer tag; not solely mule deer. I hunted southern AZ in Jan. but didn't fill the tag so I'm going back to try and fill it in Aug/Sep.

to be clear, what they are talking about is he got a 2023 nonresident archery deer tag on december 1st when non resident archery deer tags went on sale. That allows him to hunt any OTC archery deer tag in January, august, december hunt in 2023 as long as that unit is still open. The draw archery tags will be drawn starting tomorrow (cc hits that is)

Yes, that is correct. Sorry for any confusion. I referred to it as a mule deer tag only because that's what I'll be going for (as opposed to a coues deer).

Send a PM. Unit specific information threads like these are frowned upon and I believe will get deleted these days.
