I was still hunting through timber and was able to stalk into 30 yards on this buck. Everything was going great till the shot broke and I twitched. The shot hit great elevation but was back. After finding my arrow covered in guts, I made the hard decision to pull out. Unfortunately it poured rain all night and when I got back at daylight there was no sign anywhere. Began to contour the area back and forth when I found him. It was a great to relief to find him and he had died. Got him packed out and the meat is just fine. My arrow had nicked the liver.

Congrats on an awesome buck!!! and congrats on the happy ending! My wife got her first ever Blacktail this year. Any mature blacktail is a hard earned trophy in my book

Thanks everyone. He went about 210 yards. This is the first time I have ever gut shot something and really struggled with the decision on what to do. Luckily the temps were in the 30’s with a high of maybe 42. Shot occurred at 11 and found him at 9am. All the meat was cool to the touch even around the bone. It has a gamey smell, but no sour or rotten like smell.

Nice buck! Still struggling to figure out the late archery season. Looks like still hunting the big timber was a good plan.
