Here’s another PA State Gamelands buck. I caught him sneaking around the edge of a bedding area on 12/5 at 9:45. He is an 8 point with a 23” inside spread. I will be sending another tooth in for aging.

Man you guys have some wild bucks on here, much respect. Really wish Virginia had these kind of opportunities- we have relatively little public land here, and the dog hunters bring the quality and age class of deer on it so far down as to make hunting it not even worthwhile. Sweet pics thought, and congrats to the guys who got it done!

Thanks guys. There is some great public land hunting in PA. Only problem is that most of it requires a lot of time getting into the spots and a lot of hard work once you get an animal on the ground. Most guys I see in the woods ask where I am going and when I tell them they say they will not hunt there because its impossible to get one out if you shoot it. I just reply "Yea. That's a good problem to have." This one took me around 4 hours to get to the truck and it was miserable, but well worth the effort.

2018 and 2020. Both state forest bucks. Smaller one was aged at 4.5/possibly 5.5 and the bigger one was aged at 3.5

Here is my 2020 PA public land buck. Had pictures of this deer throughout the summer. Narrowed down a ridge I thought he was bedded on. Was able to kill him on my second time in the stand on October 8th at 12 yards. My arrow hit high due to the angle at that range and it buried down into him almost up to the fletching. The blood was minimal due to high hit and no exit but was able to slowly follow the trail and recover this buck about 200 yards from impact site. I was over 2 miles back up and down multiple ridges so I had to quarter and pack him out to get back to the truck. Couldn’t be happier but sad my season here in PA is already over.
Amazing buck!

This just popped up as an email reminder. Guess I didn’t update on my season. 8 pt from the summer showed 10 mins into Archery, same stand 30 mins into Bear season I arrowed one, the next AM same stand trying to punch a doe tag a bear the Bio estimated over 600 lbs hung out directly under me for 20 mins. I decided no does would hang near him and went to love my stand that afternoon. Clanging stand must’ve been a dinner bell to a Mama bear and her 3 grown Cubs. Saw a shadow and turned from buckling stand to see her on hind legs peeking over a shrub at me from 20 ft!!

All the early success left me time to make my first trip north to Pulaski for the tail end of the Salmon run. I had a schedule conflict so only had a one day “Suicide Run” with no sleep the night before.
Lost a monster, land a monster, lost a beautiful tail walking Coho, finished the day with 2 hens over 20 lbs.

I didn’t get good river pics being so exhausted from deprivation, chasing fish 1/8 mile or more each to stay hooked up, then wading in and out a few miles. Next day pics are not great but I’ll share.

Thought the male was good but not exceptional. Turns out his 44” length by 25” girth is the same as the Lake Ontario record. Bummer I was in the tackle shop parking that evening and it had a few cars so I ran across the street to a grocery store for ice instead then beat feet back to PA.52959BB8-2B3F-4EB4-B0B4-1A38B98B9558.jpegDBB1FCB1-B341-46E8-BDF4-B1985FBC9358.jpeg

Only had the little cooler, didn’t expect to catch a limit in 6 casts. Fish didn’t have the Zombie skin the day I caught them but overnight in cooler wasn’t good to them for next day pics. Even after sleep you can see how wiped I was. Pushing 40 and seems I can’t pull off days of exertion without sleep.
Pics at the river aren’t clear but I’ll add them. For some scale I’m 6’3” and a little under 200 lbs. The Male I brought out when I went for lunch. His Kype hit my neck and tail slapped my middle calf. Had to wrap the stringer around a branch after it cut too much circulation off. 7910ED95-2376-45FE-8F58-BF08C71B1ECD.jpegA8F82279-7759-430D-B877-BCB223ED706A.jpeg

I was a little heart broken I’d punched my tag but then realized I had the perfect sized bear for the drag/eating part and I could’ve arrowed the big guy a hundred times without trying to get it out of the woods. No ATV/vehicle access there. Lot of guys gave me grief for not “buddy tagging”. No thanks, I’ve had an awesome season and wouldn’t rob someone else of a chance at that monster. I made my choice when I arrowed the first one.

A few weeks later filling my doe tag the heavy 8 that I had video of sparing with my 8 showed under my stand a few days. Tried getting a neighbors son into my stand since the bucks are like clockwork before Rifle starts but he’s a college kid with different priorities. He did go out but only midday out of a blind behind his house. Tried convincing my Brother who moved in with us last year that he needed to get tags and hung the bear the day after I saw it but couldn’t convince him. He’s had a rough go so maybe next year.

I’m not usually this lucky and spend a lot of time hiking the steep mountains behind my house hunting and fishing. Guess the good Lord figured I needed an easy win this year.
Honestly, I didn’t put my stand out until the night before and this spot is my quick access spot. Came out of garage so probably smelled like it. I wasn’t wearing camo and even climbed that morning then realized I had field points on still. Thought of just sitting enjoying the morning but I’d kicked up 4 groups of deer on the way in so I gained some ambition and raced home still unsure if I’d hunt or have breakfast with the kids. 5 deer in my yard convinced me to grab broadheads and go.

After a noisy climb back up in my Climber the buck popped out a few minutes after. I was just settling in. Easy 20 yard broadside and even stopped at a tree before my lane to give me a window to move into position.
