Hey guys so in a effot to always lose weight out of my pack I decided to lighten up the tripod. Hopefully it is helpful to someone else who doesn’t need such a high tripod.

So I started by removing the 2 bottom sections of the legs and installing a simple rubber cap over the exposed threads. I also removed the foam portion on the one leg and cut down the existing handle on the head. I now have the promaster XC525C with a Sirui VA5 that weighs 2.6 pounds. Not the lightest setup that is available but it is extremely sturdy and the head is amazing to use.

I just weighed mine, all leg sections still intact, with my Outdoorsmans regular panhead. 2lb 11.9oz.

Do you have a link to where you bought the rubber caps? I have the exact same tripod and this would be great for lightening it up for backpack use!

I removed the lowest leg sections. 5/8 in caps would not fit. I used 3/4 in. caps that fit well.
These caps are heavy, at 1.3 ounces for 3. Are the caps described in the first post of lighter weight, or have others found light weight caps?
I did not remove the next leg sections as described in the first post, but I would think the cap for that leg section would need to be at lease 0.8 in diameter, as the threads to be covered are about 0.84 in.

With the lowest leg sections removed it is 39 1/2 inches to the table. With the center column extended 48 1/2 inches. I am 5' 10 in. With the column extend extended about 6 in. it is fine for standing behind an angled spotter. It is too low for binoculars .
