Proven load combinations for CVA Accura V2?

running very similar load: cci magnum 209 primer, 100 gr Blackhorn 209 powder, federal bor loc 350 gr lead bullet. Out of CVA accura v2

I too use a very similar load. I've tried Power belts, Barnes TMZs, and a couple others but have settled on the Hornady SSTs due to some accuracy and penetration issues. Blackhorn is the only way to go for powder IMO.

I have been using two 50 grain pellets of the IMR white hots with a 245 grain hollow point powerbelt and a Remington Kleanbore primer. They have been very accurate and I have not had a misfire yet even after days of pouring rain.

My main issue is penetration though. I have shot 4 deer with that combo and three of them dropped and the 4th ran about 200 yards with no blood trail. To be fair, that shot was a little far forward but still a lung shot. Of the 3 that dropped, one was about 150 lb and the other two were about 225 lb. The two over 200 lb took several minutes to die. Not a single one had a pass through even when broadside from 25 yards. All of the recovered bullets are just flat pancakes that typically get stuck in the backside ribs/shoulder.

This summer I will be testing out some of the Barnes 300 grain spitfire MZ bullets to make sure they are accurate before hitting the woods. I'm determined to get a pass through so I can have a blood trail.

I had a muzzy hunt last fall in 16E with the same muzzleloader. I topped it with a Nikon BDC 3-10 and i settled on a triple 777 100gr charge with federal BOR Lock 270gr. This was my grouping at 25, 50, and 100 with a dead center hold off my day pack with a 10mph crosswind. Temp was high 80s and single digit RH. I swabbed the barrel between changing distances and allowed 5 min between swabs to cool the barrel.

What have you CVA guys found is the best powder/projectile combo for the Accura V2?

I did quite a bit of load testing yesterday with an Accura V2 and a few combinations I had available. Working on a load for Utah Muley Hunt this fall.
My best results were as follows.
150gr Hogdon Pyrodex
250gr Barnes Spit-fire T-EZ
Speed adv 2084FPS over the 8 shots that I got a good reading on. The part that really impressed me was 49FPS ES on 8 shots. I’ve seen worse than that on factory rifle ammo. Over all I’m very impressed with this combo and this rifle.
1” 3shot group at 100yds started with clean rifle, no swab between shots and loaded them back to back no cooling time. Cleaned and shot 4” group at 200yds cleaned again and shot little better than 4” group at 300yds!

I went shooting yesterday with a tripod and a camp chair. The pic is my group at 45 yards with two 50 gr white hots and the Barnes 285 gr MZ spitfire bullets.

I used a spit swab between each shot to get rid of the fouling. Those bullets were super tight to load if I didn't run a swab in between shots.

My second shot was a little high but I also noticed that I must not have swabbed as well because the bullet was more difficult to seat than the other two.

I still need to shoot it at 100 yards to see how it does but I am pleased with the initial results.

I also have a bottle of loose pyrodex that I want to try. I doubt that I would hunt with loose powder but you never know.

What size or bullet are you purchasing when you say Hornady SST's? A link would be great as im unfamiliar with this load. Continue to hear the same message

These are the bullets I have been using for the last couple of years and have had ok success(1 deer) and great accuracy with them. I settled out on 100-110 grains (by volume) Blackhorn 209.
The Blackhorn 209 powder was the big game changer for me-I can shoot quite a few more loads between cleaning and the accuracy improved immensely.

My .50 Cal Accura V2 shoots well with this combo. I haven't tried many different load combinations because this one produces 1-1.5 MOA groups from a bench using peep sights which is plenty good for me.

110-120 grains (by volume) Blackhorn 209 under a 250 grain Thor. Federal 209A primers.

My best load so far was Hornady SST 250gr with Harvester crush rib sabots over 90 by vol. BH 209. Was very accurate to 250 -300 yds but not super fast in my Accura V2. It also matches the BDC on my Bushnell Trophy DOA 250 scope well.

Exactly the same load I have been shooting for the last 4 seasons.

I have a T/C Omega, but wanted a ML better capable with fullsize conicals so bought a CVA Accura V2 thinking it would be the ticket.........and then I found out that they aren't designed for any lead conicals over 400gr. I wanted to shoot the 460gr No Excuses. Has anyone tried anything above 400gr in their CVA?

Yes. I have shot plenty of the no excuses 495 in my little wolf over a felt wad and 85 grains 777. It is accurate and hits HARD.

Wrench, that's a good combo. I tried a 460 gr No Excuses with 85 grains of 777 fffg last night and that's the best results I've seen using the 460 bullet (for reference - I've tried 60-75 grains of Pyrodex fffg)

Now, I did not use a felt wad and cleaning the bore I did see some lead flakes. I just ordered some felt wads so that should fix the leading. I think I'm heading down the right track. Thank you.

My only other question is fffg vs ffg. Anyone have any preference over the two?

Thanks for the tips offered here. Took my Accura out yesterday with 75 grins (by weight) of Blackhorn 209 and 250 gr Barnes T-EZ bullets. Great performance!! No more powerbelts.

i did try the “one-size” Thor’s but couldn’t even get them into end of the barrel.


next up I may try some Barnes TTSX .458 socom bullets with MMP sabots. Or just be satisfied with the T-EZs.

I have shot both at targets, but never launched the 460 into anything living.....but i can't imagine 30 grains will make any difference. The bullets are hard enough to penetrate like mad and heavy enough to keep going. I'd buy what you csn get a bunch of and go shoot. The price makes practice affordable.

Started shooting the 420 grain no excuses yesterday; good stuff. Those things make a whole in the target.. Impressive! must say shoulder a little sore today though lol.. CVA says max is 400 grain bullets however you can do the the 420 grains. Shot them with 100 gr by volume of blackhorn 209.

What powder charge have you found to shoot best with that setup? I will be hunting that bullet this year for elk. However, I’m still deciding on my powder amount.

100 grains by volume. Might be better with 95 haven’t had time to try it yet though

What sabots are you sst shooters using? I tried the sst’s years ago and they did not fit well in my accura barrel. I was obviously not using the right size sabot.
