Damn...I was really liking the concept before I saw the FAQ link. It makes me wonder why freezing affects this design, I get it when it comes to the filter tubes, but I would have thought it would not matter for this.
Might have to do with the pores in the filter itself. If water was present and it froze inside the filter, as the frozen water expanded (Ice) it would enlarge the pores and damage the filter. Probably the larger pores would allow contaminants to flow through the now expanded pores.
