Need help trying to decide what my next build should be. Typically use my guns for hunting. Being in Texas, that ranges from small varmints to Nilgai, and out of state Elk and Mule Deer hunts. Just starting to get into reloading, so would be open to a more non-complex wildcat. I also like shorter 18-22” barrels, as I hunt mostly suppressed. I currently have a well built .223, 6.5 PRC, 300 WSM, and .308. The 6.5 is lights out and covers most medium game. Also have factory guns in 300 AAC, 22-250, .243, .270, etc.

I have a Rem 700 SA carbon fiber McMillan Game Warden stock that I really like, with no home.

Thought about a 7-08 build (had some as kid and liked em), 22 Creedmoor, or sell the stock and get a LA and do a 300 PRC. Wouldn’t mind another smaller round for varmint hunting, or a larger round for big game. But that would involve selling the stock and my 300 WSM is being setup for 212-215 grain bullets.

What would you do?

The 22 Creedmoor is an absolute killer! I am pushing an 85.5 Berger Hybrid at 3400 fps! Coyotes out to 800 yards are a breeze. You could also go nuts with a light bullet and push the speed limit! You should be able to push 50 grain bullets well over 4000 fps with the 22 Creed.

I've never even opened a book/webpage about 22 creed but anything going 4k at the muzzle gets me excited!!! I grew up reloading and shooting with my grandpas ruger m77 220 swift. Those guns are an absolute blast to shoot at varmint sized critters. Would have done some work on deer if IN allowed calibers that small.

I’d not use a Rem 700! By the time you have one trued up and lugs lapped, you could buy a quality custom 700 clone action. And you’d still have a ridiculous place for the bolt release and a cheesy extractor in the stock 700.

Buy a quality custom action with a 700 footprint and go from there.

I built a 7-08 ackley just to run a 20” barrel I can push a 140 Barnes at an honest 3165 and 120 sierras at 3250. I’ve killed everything from elk to prarie dogs with it. Kenny Jarrett has built several that’s actually where I got the idea. Mines on a surgeon 591 in a McMillan game scout stock. If I could only have one rifle for the lower 48 that would be it. Just fire form factory loads then voila you have ready ai brass. I kill lot (around 50 pa year ) of coyotes with it. It’s my go too gun superbly accurate handy to carry and points like a trap gun. When I toast the throat I’ll see what a 18” barrel will do. I have a 6 creed also that has a threaded 20” barrel when I toast that barrel I’ll go back with a proof carbon in..... 7-08ai. The 22 creed is a great round and brass prep is minimal now that the 6 is so popular. I believe there’s some ready head stamped 22 creed brass available as well. Not sure as I have a 22-243 and haven’t found the need to trade it for a creed.

I’m a huge fan of shorter rifles. I’m currently building a 7mm-08 for suppressed deer hunting in a box blind in MN. Seems like a caliber with good BCs but still efficient enough to have decent velocities when hacked sub 20”.

I’m leaning 22 creed. 4000 FPS in a little build sounds fun. I do like the 7-08 though, but not sure I’d see much difference over the 6.5 PRC.
