Has anyone ever attempted rice sides while backcountry hunting. I’m thinking I could boil water put it in a Mylar pack and let set for 10-15 instead of simmer for 7 after a boil.

I've never done the rice but I have used the Knorr pasta sides alfredo. I did just what you described but I have an insulated kozy that I put it in while I waited for it to rehydrate. Turned out really good.

We bring those Uncle Ben Ready Rice pouches to base camp all the time. The rice is cooked, just needs to be reheated. We usually just toss the bags in a pot of water on the wood stove or grill to heat up.... They would work well in the backcountry as long as you could fit the pouch into your stove pot.

That is a great tip. Thank you. I’m all the time looking for cheap light ways to pack in food. Especially with a very picky pre-teen boy. Lol

Those Knorr sides are great. Don’t forget about the Idaho mashed potatoes with bacon and cheese either!
You can make a kozy from reflectix insulation wrap. It’s the bubble wrap with foil stuff.

What kinda Kozy do you have

I transfer the Knorr side to a vac seal bag and seal it before going on my hunt. I don't vac it. I just squeeze the extra air out then seal it. I use the vac seal bag to reheat it in inside the cozy.

Here's what I do for rice and pasta. Cook it at home and dehydrate it in the dehydrator. Works great and cooks fast at camp.
