I've tried several calibers on coyotes. When I didn't care for fur I'd run what ever is out there. The 223 of course is the industry favorite but I'm not a fan of double taps nor them running off and me having to trail them. This last year I moved to 6 Creed with a Hornady 103 eldm bullet and have successfully found a round that save the fur and knocks their lights out. My hole in fur is typically the size of a dime.

Tried them all or so it seems. Shot em with everything from 22mag to 338 edge. I use 223 almost exclusively now. Inside 200 my 16in AR outside my original early 90's tikka ctr with 20 in bull barrel. I shoot lots of coyotes and sell every hide I can.

What sort of optics are most of you guys using? Just about finished with my 6.5 Grendel. The PA 1-8 will be good for the range around here, but not sure how well it would do for coyotes

It's an accuracy vs. volume question. I'd rather have confidence in a accurate first shot than try to follow up several times. That said if you have a bull barrel AR then that's tough to beat, kind if best if both worlds. My ar isnt the most accurate so I'm hunting with my 6.5 savage 110.

If you’re new to coyote calling, use whatever rifle you have. Put in the time to understand coyote behavior. Learn how the wind will affect your approach and setup. Buy the best call you can afford. You’ll have way more opportunities if you spend your time and money this way than you will if you stress about bolt/ar. (I shoot both for coyotes.)

I agree with Tback. Try it with what you have first. Then determine if you want to go from there. It can be a rabbit hole where you have a gun for different applications (woods/prairie/etc.)
Most important is just getting out an hunting!

I had several 223, 22 250, 22 250AI , 243, 25 06 (brands). That I have used over the yrs. I have a ar. I used a 22 250 a bunch. Then went 22 250AI with Berger hp. Then I looked a 204 ruger one day. Shot it havent went back to the 22 250AI. I shoot a tc venture 204 ruger 1@ 10 twist with Nikon scope. With 35gr Berger 28gr H4895. ( I think is the grs.) I just bought some 40gr Berger to try. Just to see what the 40gr will be any better. I didnt like my tika t3 22 250 1@14 twist. I could get mine to group anything over a 52gr a max. I sold it an bought a tc venture 22 250. On the 204 I like watching the bullet hit . Thru the scope no recoil .

I think a 6.5 grendel in an ar platform is the ultimate coyote gun. Definitely prefer an AR platform whatever the cartridge for follow up and running shots. Used a .223 for years and really like the 6.5 after making the switch

Sold my .223 and got a .243 for coyotes. Like the flexibility for other uses, also.
