I’m putting together a family trip in the San Juans. We would like to do a few 1-2 night backpacking trips linked together with a night car camping. We are going to do Ice Lake/island lake as it’s always been on my list. Looking for some locals ideas on their favorite high country trails. With the kids we don’t want more than 5 miles a day. That’s kind of their limit with packs. Anyway, just fishing for some ideas. Thanks.

Ice Lakes is nice, but it’s also super popular. I’d veer towards a week day if at all possible. Also, get going early because it’s an alpine hike, subject to afternoon storms and due to the altitude, often much, much slower hiking than estimated.

Columbine Lake is aesthetically similar to Ice Lakes, but not as crowded. It might just be the longest 3.5 miles of trail in the world, though.

I keep wanting to head up there but always run out of time. How is the fishing?
