You are talking about two lawyers who live in the middle of a large city. The fact that they even had firearms they probably sort of knew how to use means they are already light years more prepared than the family next to them. Do you really expect people of this walk of life to be prepping and doing tactical training regularly? Put into perspective who we are talking about here. Had they not even taken the small step of arming themselves you could well see the St. Louis version of what happened to Ambassador Stevens. Cut them a break.

Really? Benghazi? I guess Stevens died because no one had a gun, if only there had been a gun.

I had not heard of the Kalashnikov carrying Libyan militias roaming the streets of American cities in technicals while burning tires. Thank Odin and the gods I can slay them all with my AR because of the Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal films I binge watch, I am the real Jason Bourne! This is SPARTA!!!

Seriously though, people who don't train and don't have backup are the last people who should consider hunting down trouble if it comes knocking and the ones who need solid strategy the most.

Getting a little excited there buddy.

I’m just happy that whatever they did, worked.

I’ll never belittle anyone for doing what they think they have to do to to survive. Never understood that.

OK, so the op just asked for some gear advice. Pretty straight forward.

My personal views are that people should be considering their options if things get real bad all of a sudden. These protests and/or riots can escalate very fast. Recently average people have been dragged out of cars and beaten, cops have been shot/assaulted and so on........someone can be caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and I think that is obvious.

People that loose badly when a unexpected violent action is taken against them generally have one first thought. 'I cannot believe this is happening to me'. Then it is generally over for them.

By putting some thought into what to do and how to do it a person may be able to avoid that line of thinking and go straight to productive actions.

I wonder what will happen if we have an incident similar to Kent State at one of these protests? It is possible we could see almost immediate nationwide (to a degree) chaos if that happens. When cops refuse to protect themselves, their own equipment and headquarters do you think they will protect you? I think the Georgia State Police headquarters was set on fire a few days ago by "protesters'.......so this is not a far fetched fantasy at all.

As far as the example given (St. Louis married couple) I do not know what point the op was trying to make by giving that example so whether that couple was correct/incorrect is a mute point because I do not know the context the example was used for. Could have been simply that a mob of people show up outside your house and you do not know what will happen next.....

Carry on.

You get it. That couple was just an example of how circumstances can change without warning. Anything can happen, turn down the wrong street and oops...a couple thousand people in black FLOYD shirts envelope your vehicle. It's hard to wrap your head around such insanity in the moment and panic is your worst enemy, something that can and will get you killed. So I'm just contemplating some ways to mitigate the risks if I find myself threatened by a mob with no way out. I'm not stopping to find out how deadly the protest is...forwards or backwards, I'm getting outta there by any means necessary. Like my steep bumper? It's ANTIFA proof.

Clearly some posters need to either be introduced to or refresh their knowledge of Reginald Denny story. I wonder if he would have liked the option of an ar10 that day.

Sometimes trouble finds you...if it does, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being prepared to stomp a mud hole in it. In fact, if you're a husband and a father...it's your responsibility.

I can’t imagine rioters are going to, with uncommon valor, form a coordinated and flanking attack under O.P.’s withering gunfire as a second magazine change from an AR becomes necessary for survival. I guess what I’m really trying to say is that a chest rig isn’t the answer to your concerns. I use the sarcasm to illustrate the point, but I mean it in a respectful way as a fellow Rokslide’r.

Instead of strapping on a chest-rig and deciding how many U.S. citizens it would be necessary for me to mow down I’d prefer a semi-auto pistol in my pocket and a friendly smile to help get my family away from a riot in a far more recoverable position.

Yeah this thread is ridiculous...so much fear these days. Left, right, or somewhere in the middle, everyone is scared shitless. Just live your life and stop worrying about the 0.00000000000000000000003% chance that you or your family are going to be mobbed by protestors.

I do come here for the hunting and gear. Lurk 99.9 percent of the time because that's enough for my gear whore addiction. I read posts like this and dont see an innocent gear request. I see people who are obviously trained in either police or military tactics chomping at the bit to play the willing role of the fascist. China, every other country has our true measure now. If some evil actor had a more serious virus they know damn well we are more likely to shoot each other than them.

I also own an ADC company and some of the cattle ranches in AZ have frequent problems with trespassers of the cartel type. Now instead of a 22-250 I'll be using an AR. Might wear this vest too. These are sprawling ranches and sometimes I don't see anyone during an entire day. When I read about cartels killing entire families in their AZ homes I stop and question the wisdom of my work. Found 30 illegals in a culvert once...it was unnerving. They were filthy and crazed looking...like a Michael Jackson Thriller video. In retrospect they were probably just thirsty and afraid but it left an impression. If anyone wants to judge me for buying a tactical vest that's fine, I don't care. Some people think I'm paranoid because I have a CCW permit, others because I have two fire extinguishers in my truck. I don't care to judge the choices of others and don't really worry what strangers think of me or my choices. Those who waste time criticizing the actions of strangers online should probably be doing something constructive with their time. That's about the only judgment I'll make. G'night roksliders...be safe and be well.

Bruce's question has great merit. And now, ahead of time, is when to ask it. I think it's safe to say we all learned something from the "Rooftop Koreans", yes?

Back in '92 I had to drive my then M.I.L. back to just damn 2 blocks away from where they pulled Reginald Denney out of that truck and damn near beat him to death. This was later that same day. The RTD buses to downtown where she worked as a seamstress (if I recall she didn't have "real" papers yet) the buses cutoff service. Obviously they were not going to send their vehicles thru there. So... over in WestLA, she shows up on our doorstep. "Oh, Ok." So now we gotta drive her back home to what was Berendo Ave. off Rosecrans, just before Figueroa, by all those Card Casinos right there. Know the area well enough, lived with them there for almost a year after first marrying their daughter as a young man.

Anyhoo... without getting into all the details of all the surreal OMG!!! things I saw that day... one thing for sure, was that all the damn crips... both wannabes and sometimes real OG lookin' loc'd out mofos... were on the corners throwin' up sets where the residential streets met with Rosecrans. Let's just say I was feelin' damn glad I was in a car with that nice, dark-brown skinned mother of theirs.

Point being... don't do it... don't sit there and talk your mess to somebody just wanting to be ready for that. If you haven't seen it up close and personal? You just don't know how nerve-racking and tense things get in an area like that.

That experience is as harrowing as it gets. Sincere question. If you found those people alive would you give your all to help them? Would you point your ar at em and march them to a death on the other side of the border? Would you seek for their asylum or give them a doing 31 in a 30 zone ticket cuz the law be the law? Not being a jackass although it is certainly in my wheelhouse. My brother in law is a game warden north enough of there that he doesn't have to deal with it but close enough that everyone in the family is aware of the dangers of the area and the desperation of humans looking for better.
