scents

we cant bait in mo and only a few bears in the whole state so odds are stacked against me. scents are legal so I am going to put out a couple areas with scent only. 1. how many days should I put it out before I hunt, or just put it out and hunt? 2. should I put it around a water source? 3. what scents do you guys like best, I can get almost any scent but leaning towards butterscotch, anise oil, or bacon.
