I'm looking for a scope for my son's rifle and would like one that he can dial so we can practice shooting long range together. I would also like to not break the bank. We won't shoot a ton of long range (dialing) and mostly he'll be using it for 100 yard shots with an occasional long shot (possibly on an antelope hunt). Currently, I'm thinking Leupold VX3i 4-14x40 30mm tube with CDS dial. I can pick one up for about $600. Any other options in this price range?

I also was in your shoes and just picked up a fixed power SWFA that was on black friday sale. Check them out, they are very reasonably priced compared to variable powered scopes. I bought mine for $259.00 on sale. I realize they aren't the very best but they get great reviews for what they are.

If you're not looking at long ranges, I'd stick with a more lightweight 1 inch tube. A vx3i with cds-zl would probably be my first choice, or stick to the upper limit and try to find a zeiss V4.
