Second Rifle Unit 41 input

I am planning at trip out with a buddy to unit 41 for the OTC bull second rifle season. It is our first elk trip to Colorado and his first backpacking trip. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advise on good places to start in this area; he graduated in wildlife biology so he has some clue of elk ecology. We are using OnX and Gohunt to find the public land.

we plan to hike in a few miles and drop a base camp; from there follow bugles. Sounds like a sound plan but input is welcome. We have a truck with a camper slide that we can retreat to if things get bad.
