Sounds like a good plan. Whatever you choose, practice shooting further than you expect to. That will make the 200-300 yard shots that much easier when your heart is racing.

Absolutely! Like I mentioned earlier I use that strategy with archery all summer. Most of the summer I shoot 40-70 yards knowing full well that I won’t take a shot over 40 during deer season. But the comfort at 50 makes the 25 yard shots feel like a slam dunk.

Once you get what ammo you think works best, be sure you practice shooting from various positions. Also do some jumping jacks or climb a hill (whatever you can do to get your heart and breathing rate up) and practice taking shots that way.
For practice shooting, check out ebay and buy yourself some 1/2'"AR 500 steel gongs (the 8" size is pretty cheap). If you can hit that every time from your different shooting positions, you'll be good to go.
