I'm looking to put an 18" 7mm McGowan Tikka prefit together for another lightweight suppressed timber to 700 yard hunting rifle.
I'm looking to send 168-175 class bullets at 2650 to meet my range requirements for elk.
Does anyone have experience with short barreled 284s?
My second thought is to go with a 7 wsm since I already have bushing dies and Hornady brass...
I Kinda like the idea of a 284 though with abundant Lapua brass and less powder down the tube, I'm just wanting to make sure my velocity goal is achievable

I'd be shocked if you couldn't easily get 2700-2700+ with 168's - 175's from a 18in 284, especially using RL26.

If you wanted to do one of the short mags, using a tube that short, I would probably look at doing a 7mm SAUM and use ADG brass over a 7WSM.

I have a pile of RL26 so that'd probably be what I'd end up using, I'm really going to be bummed if those 175s go sub 2650 though

I should also say that I have a lightweight 16" 6.5 saum that I run suppressed and
I'm getting 2925 with 144 hybrids, 800 yard hits on s 12" plate is pretty easy.
I'm so happy with it that I want a duplicate so wifey and I aren't sharing during elk season where we mainly hunt timber with the occasional shot across a clear-cut
One thing about the saum case that I don't like is the 30 degree shoulder angle, I trim every 2-3 firings while my experience with 35 degree wsms is 5 firings.
What really attracts me to the 284 is that its also a 35 degree shoulder, and Lapua brass is readily available.

The .284 is listed as a cartridge in Berger's Reloading Manual. Might be worth the purchase or perhaps someone can take a quick pic of the data for you. Nosler is showing the .284 flinging a 175 ABLR at 2641 fps with a 24" barrel at SAMMI length and 51 gr. of Hunter powder. Perhaps with R-26 and loaded longer you get that up to 2700? 2750?, cut 6" off then what...maybe back down to 2550-2600?? That Berger manual be good to look at.

The Berger manual is frequently quite bad in my opinion. 300 norma had starting charges that were too hot across the board and others i've found maximum charges well below a reasonable and well accepted charge levels. I was not the anomaly in these cases.

Yeah loading manuals are pretty useless when you get into custom throttling.
Im getting 2800 with 175 ablr and r23 out of my tikka with 23” barrel
That's pretty damn good
Is yours throated longer than saami?
I'm curious what your oal is with the 175s

It’s not a saami chamber, it was throated for that exact bullet to use as much room as the Tikka mag allows.
