Getting dialed in for an August trip to the 40-mile country north of Tok. Curious what shot distance you were able to get inside of to kill your animal with a compound?

In the 40-mile country there are lots of short trees and shrubs even above "treeline." Lots of undulating terrain features too. The key to close range caribou action is identifying the trail network they are currently using.

So, locate where animals are commonly noted and then ambush within 20 yards from your site selection.

Ranges of feet vs yards is not uncommon using the above technique and wind direction.

That said, any random spot and stalk encounter you could expect to get within 80 yards being a complete dumb ass with technique. If the herd is spooked then that may extend to 100 yards.

Exactly what Larry said. Watch them, they will travel a route. Then pick an ambush point. These guys were 70 yards from camp, care less that we were there.

I've killed a few up here in Alaska, but none in the 40 mile area. The north slope tundra is much different than where you'll be hunting in that there is no cover. Most of the 40 Mile is exactly how Larry described and perfect for stalking. That said, I've taken them at 95, 80, 70, several around 60 and 4 inside of 40 with the closest two being less than 15. Best of luck on your hunt!
