Having hunted Colorado for over 25 years, it's been my experience that if you are in really good elk country, there is not a lot of mulies, and vice versa. Having said that, I had two decent mulies run within 5 yards of me as I was trying to take a midday nap, while elk hunting.

Just to clarify, I always bow hunt, rifle seasons could be different, I don't know.

I will have a mulie and elk tag on my first diy hunt this fall. As long as you can keep the meat from spoiling(see the meat care thread for that)then everything should be fine. To me it's all about having options while hunting. I plan on going mainly for elk, but if I happen to see a mulie worth shooting then I'll change my plan up and go after it. Granted the odds of getting both animals on the same hunt aren't the greatest but if you're hunting a long season like archery you can always go back if you only get one animal on your first try and have days left in the season.
